·        Bats by Gail Gibbons

·        Short, teacher made video presentation on bats

Procedures:

1.      After we have finished with group time, I will introduce our new unit of study.

2.      We will create a KWL chart as a class.  I will try to get every student to contribute at least once.

3.      I will play the short video for my students.

4.      I will read aloud Bats by Gail Gibbons.  Every now and then I will pause in the text to ask questions or to emphasize a point/fact.

5.      After I have finished the book, I will ask them for some new facts they have learned.  I will also ask them if they have any questions or things they would like to learn about bats.  I will write these on a large sheet of paper that will hang in the room for our class to refer to during our unit study.  I will also remind the students of the Wonder Wall located near the Science/ Discovery center.  This is where they can jot down any questions they might have and we will try to answer them as a class.

Assessment:

For this lesson, assessment will be based on participation during all parts of the lesson (KWL chart, read aloud, class discussion).
