THE PARTS OF SPEECH
The “parts of speech” are the different types of words
that we can find in a sentence.
Noun: A noun is a person, place, thing, quality, or act.
Examples: pencil, girl, supermarket, happiness, igloo.
Verb: Verbs are action words that
tell what nouns do.
Examples: to fly, to run, to be, jump, live
Adjective: An adjective describes a
noun.
Examples: powerful, trustworthy, hairy, crazy, wonderful
Adverb: An adverb describes a
verb, adjective, or adverb. It often ends in "ly".
Examples: carefully, easily, slowly
Interjection:
Small words that show our feeling, our reaction to something.
Examples: Wow, Gosh, Oops!
Preposition: A preposition tells us
about the position or direction of things (or nouns).
Examples: to, under, behind, between, from
Conjunction: A conjunction joins together
words, phrases, or sentences.
Examples: and, or, but, because
Pronoun: A pronoun replaces a noun or noun phrase.
Examples: he, it, they
