Electrolyte Mix
For replacement of electrolytes lost via sweat during strenuous activity
Homemade Electrolyte Mixture:
1 Tablespoon salt; 1 Tablespoon Morton's salt substitute (potassium chloride); 2 tablets extra strength Tums; 500mg. magnesium; 2 tablespoons Karo syrup, honey, molasses, or maple syrup.
Crush and mix into a gallon of room temperature water and let horse drink; or mix with applesauce or molasses and administer orally with an empty thoroughly clean paste dewormer sryinge.
Comments/Drawbacks.
If your horse has been engaged in strenuous physical activity and appears to be suffering from heat exhaustion, call your vet right away, and ask whether your homemade electrolyte concoction is appropriate for your horse's specific case.  Don't use a commercial product for use in the treatment of calves with scours-such products usually contain sodium bicarbonate, which our horse probaly doesn't need, and might mae him worse
