| Romania | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The last few years I went to Romania quite a few times. Until now i went there 6 times. Mostly i was in Constanta, which is at the Black Sea coast, but also i went to Targoviste (Dumbovita). Of course i saw Bucarest as well. There is so much left to see though....Romania is a very unknown country in "western" countries like the Netherlands. I would love to get to know the country (and people and culture) way better than i do now. And that's not only because of some people i already know, but I think it's a pity that this country is so much left aside. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| About the Romanian culture I don't know enough yet. The main religion in Romania is Orthodox. The Orthodox churches are very nice to see, lots of colours! The country has a lot of problems, but that doesn't mean it wouldn' t be interesting to go there and see it. Most Romanian people I got to meet are very nice, of course there are exceptions everywhere.Romania is quite a poor country, but that doesn't mean the Romanians don't try to make the best out of it. They are latin people...partying as much as they can! If you are able to taste some of the Romanian cuisine, do not tell me how good the sarmale or mamaliga (cu branza si smantanta) were..please..do not remind me how myammeee that is! Why can't we have these in the Netherlands...oh well.. (aha, like I say it's: it doesn't matter what you eat, but with who you eat it) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In Romania it can be very hot, but also very cold. When I went there first I was told i should take very very warm clothes, so I bought some very very very warm stuff....and ended up wearing just a T-shirt and things like that eventhough it was winter. Oh well, sometimes it was freezing indeed, and other times just really hot. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Romania is a beautiful country. It has a very rich nature. There is the Black Sea coast with the beaches, there are the mountains and so much more. Arriving in the capital, Bucharest (2.292 km from Amsterdam - 3 hours by plane) might be a bit confusing...seeing an Arch looking just like the Arc de Triomphe explains why this city is also called Little Paris, or Paris of Eastern Europe. In Bucharest you can see the huge People's Palace, which is one of the biggest buildings in the world. In Bucarest you can find a lot of buildings built while Romania was still a communist country, having Ceaucescu as dictator until 1989 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Constanta is Romania's second largest city, 226 km from Bucharest. Constanta is developed upon the ancient ruins of the Greek stronghold Tomis. The archeological museum is very interesting (just near the statue of famous poet Ovidius Naso), also very nice are the centre, the old centre, the "Casino", the many churches, the delphinerium and the "Aquarium". | Romania: Dracula's country... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Romania only has been called Romania since 1862, after the formation of the national state by the union of the two Romanian Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia in 1859. These days Romania is a Republic. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The first of December was adopted as National Day in 1990, being the day of celebration of the Great Assembly of Alba Iulia which voted for the union of Transylvania with Romania and which symbolise the union of all Romanians within a single state and the achievement of the unity Romanian national state. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Romanian language, which is the mothertongue of around 90 % of the population. The easternmost representative of the family of Romance languages, Romanian descends directly from Latin. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In Romania it is one hour later than in the Netherlands. So that would be: GMT +2 hours, the same time zone as they have in Israel, Republic of Moldova, Greece, Finland and Egypt. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Romanian currency is leu. (in plural it is lei) 1 leu = 100 bani, but considering that at the moment about 30.000 lei would be one euro, those banis are nothing. (bani is the Romanian word for money, not unimportant so!) The Romanian money looks very nice and colourful. The very colourful 2.000 lei thingy was made especially for the eclipse happening, you can't buy that much for it though, considering it's not even worth 10 euro cents. The purple money is a bit more, you could buy quite a lot in Romania actually, since things are rather cheap (for people from the Netherlands for example). |
