9 years before Matthew was assigned to the Excalibur, he was an ensign in the Cerberus which was later destroyed by a Shadow like vessel,Matthew was the only survivor, because he was in space repairing the Cerberus from the outside, when the Cerberus tried to flee from the vessel, they left Matthew behind, the vessel destroyed Cerberus. Gideon was left in space all alone with little oxygen left in his EVA suit, just as he has lost all hope, Matthew sees a sky full of ships and calls for help but no one answers,obviously Matthew is scared,anyway,one of the ships stops right on top of him and a door opens, Matthew enters the ship and sees a human,then it's revealed than Galen saved him, when he is back on Earth,nobody believes Matthew, but Matthew wants revenge.
Few years later, Matthew is at a bar/lounge/whatever, he is at a table playing cards, and his opponent has nothing left to bet except a box,Matthew agrees to play on, and when the man loses,he runs out happily like a man freed from jail only to be hit by a car,later it's revealed that the box is an Acolyspe box,Matthew now uses the box to find a cure, the man once told Matthew that the box lies,so can it be trusted?Elizebeth Lochley is currently Matthew's sort of girlfriend.
