You are a recently graduated special security agent and have been assigned to Great Britains Department S. You have been summoned into the office of Major B, the head of your section.
Sit down, he tells you grimly. I am about to send you out on the most important assignment of your career. Listen carefully, I shall say this only once. Seven days ago, Emma Peel, a talented amateur who worked closely with our top agent, John Steed, went on vacation. Three days later, John Steed disappeared. We assumed hed simply joined Mrs. Peel on her vacation. But, we havent heard from either of them since.
Where did Mrs. Peel go on vacation? you ask.
We dont know. She never keeps us informed of her plans. She doesnt really work for us, you know - only for and with Steed.
When was she supposed to return? you ask.
That we do know. Two days ago. Both she and Steed were supposed to report to the Librarian for a new assignment. When they didnt show up the Librarian called me. Knowing Steed and Mrs. Peel I thought if they were delayed - for personal reasons or for professional, it wouldnt take them more than a couple more days to sort it out. But they have not returned.
You nod and wait for Major B to continue.
There are two possible solutions, Major B says. Either they have both been kidnapped, and are in the hands of a clever and ruthless enemy, or they have both defected and have been embraced by the arms of that same enemy. It is your task to find them and either rescue them...or terminate them.
Are there any clues? you ask.
Itll be your job to find any of them, too. Major B says. Major B steeples his fingers and looks at you closely. This is a delicate mission. These two are among are...hell, they are our top agents. No one must know theyve gone missing until we know why theyve gone missing. Theres something else.
Major B stands up, comes to the front of his desk and leans against it. Its entirely possible that there are...traitors, within our own organization. Thats why Im sending you out on this assignment alone. You must keep your own council, and talk to no one but myself. I shall be probing other agents...if you are ever confronted by someone who gives you the codeword AMICUS, you will know that that person is an agent who can help you. Understand?
Yes, sir. you reply.
He hands you a key.
This is the key to Steeds flat. That should be your first stop. And heres a two-way radio. I want you to keep in touch with me at all times.
Before you leave here, you must visit our Special Equipment section, and pick up various items that you think will be useful. I also want you to visit our Profiler room, where youll document all of your skills. All right. Off you go.
You stand up. Major B shakes your hand. Good luck. he says grimly. The fate of the Empire rests on you. He claps you on the shoulder. Enjoy yourself.
