| THE CHINESE CRESTED This breed is in the toy group. They are very affectionate, playful and entertaining. They are wonderful companions. The Chinese Crested comes in two distinct varieties born within the same litter, the hairless and the powderpuff. The hairless variety grows hair only on its head, feet, and tail. The powderpuff variety is completely covered with a soft coat. This breed is non-shedding and needs minimal grooming. The hairless need a little more attention because their skin is exposed to the environment and prone to insect bites, scrapes, dryness, and skin irritations. Bathe at least once a week and use lotion to keep the skin from drying. Use suntan lotion to keep the skin from sunburning. The powderpuffs: Bathe when needed. Brush the coat 2 or 3 times a week to keep the coat tangle-free. AKC Standard: Height: 11-13" Weight: 10-14 lbs. |

| The Genetics of Hairlessness | ||||||||||||||||||
| (In Brief) | ||||||||||||||||||
| Hairlessness in dogs is the result of an incomplete dominant mutation, which is lethal when homozygous (carrying only the hairless gene). After generations of hairless-to-hairless breeding the Powderpuff will still appear. Hairlessness in dogs is dominant, and not recessive. The two varieties are inseparable due to this genetic make-up. Every Hairless Chinese Crested carries the dominant gene of hairlessness, and the gene for normal coat. The gene which produces hairlessness is an incomplete dominate lethal. It is only a double dose of hairless gene that is lethal. Powderpuffs carry no hairless gene at all. Both carry the gene for coat. This is why the Powderpuff can't be bred out. | ||||||||||||||||||
