Tom
Baker
Some say Tom Baker was the definitive Doctor Who.  The reason?  Most likely people think of Tom Baker's Who as the Doctor who faced crisis, danger, and even death with a wry sense of humor and almost disrespectful gaze.  In fact, in one key scene, The Face of Evil, his is asked to threaten a young warrior.  Having no weapon in hand, he grabs the fellow and announces, "Stop, or I will ki8ll him with this deadly Jelly Baby!"  When the man's friends say go ahead, Baker replies "no" and eats the Jelly Baby.  All this was an adlib, and because he didn't think the Doctor WHo character would seiously threaten anyone with death.

His toothy smile, and on screen humor didn't detract from his serious portrayal of serious events.  Unlike Patrick Troughton, Baker's humor was a far cry from Vaudvillian.  When a fan sent in this huge long scarf, Baker adopted it immediately, using it for a comedy relief incessantly.  Run into TARDIS, trip on the scarf.  Need a flair for attention, grab anf throw the scarf over shoulder.  The device became so pervasive, die hard fans would count the events.  All in all, Tom Baker was the best Doctor Who to most fans of the 70's, and still lives on with fans.
