Rocky Canyon

Driving Directions:

  1. Take I-25 North
  2. Exit #161 (Monument)
  3. Go West on 105
  4. Just before the town of Palmer Lake turn Left on South Valley Rd. (there's a speed limit sign right there)
  5. Follow a bit then Left (again) on Valley Crescent Rd.
  6. There's a tiny little sign that says "to trailhead"
The hike:
The first mile or so is up the dirt service road to the two reservoirs. Dog's must be on a leash at this point. I guess the authorities up there are real picky about this.
Anyway, once you get to the first reservoir keep an eye out for the Rocky Canyon portion of the trail. It will be near the South end of the first reservoir. Once on this inconspicuous primitive trail you'll find it's fairly rugged. I believe even the most experienced mountain biker would not be capable of riding up this. You'll know you are on the right trail because there will be HUGE boulders on your right. Ice Cave Creek runs under these "rocks". You can hear it in many places. Towards the upper end of the trail you will cross Ice Cave Creek (that's a tongue twister). Follow for a mile (maybe less). Once you reach a grove of pine trees the trail veers right and more obscurely to the left. To start back to the reservoirs go Left. Eventually you will reach Ewing Saddle. The trail takes a sharp right. To go back to the reservoirs go Left(sort of straight) and down. This then becomes (I believe) Olsen trail. You will eventually reach the Upper Reservoir. Head North on the service raod and it will take you back to the parking area.
