| Chapter Eighteen If Dao is in decadence, there is 'morality'; If there arises intelligence, there is already 'great pretence'. If familial relationships are not harmonious, there exists 'filial piety'; If the country is in turbulence, there is a call for 'patriotism'. (Heng: My favourite Chapter, short and concise. Filial piety exists because there is lack of harmony, not because it the 'correct way' to behave! Confucious should be ashamed in front of the true Dao. Similarly, intelligence only exists when there is great pretence. How true this is in our current academic world of reifications. So I know nothing for I am truly a fool! Last but not least, the rise of patriotism in the current scene is obvious. Need I say more?) |
