Name: Domaine Des Platers Type: Red Beaujolais, Gamay Vintage: 2001 Producer: Collin-Bourisset Origin: France, Beaujolais. Status: Appellation Beaujolais-Villages Controlee, Beaujolais Noveau Place of Purchase: Cold Storage (Parkway Parade) Description: This wine has such an amazingly rich aroma of nuts and chocolates in its midst that it makes you thirst for more whenever you drink it. It is sweeter than most wines and the liquid feels smooth and silky in your mouth. For the price of slightly more than $20 (I forgot the actual price), I feel that it is so good and value for money that I would recommend all wine-lovers to give it a try. Be amazed by the rich aromas that linger in your mouth in its after-taste. This wine is by far the most memorable wine that I have ever tasted and would surely want to recommend it to you. Rating: 9, a must-buy.
Name: Stone Cellars by Beringer, Merlot Type: Red Merlot, Merlot Vintage: 1999 Producer: Beringer Winery Origin: US, California, Napa Valley. Status: AVA Napa Valley. Place of Purchase: NTUC Fair Price (Bedok) Description: Coming from California's Napa Valley and produced by the relatively famous Beringer Winery, this wine is guaranteed of considerable quality. In fact, it feels relatively sweet and soft and often lingers with flavorful fruits in your mouth. This wine is the standard of what delicious merlot should be like. Though not the best wine, it doesnt disappoint you with its pleasant flavors. Costing around $20+, the wine is value for money and is a good buy from your local supermarket. Rating: 7, a quality wine.
Name: Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi, Zinfandel Type: Red Zinfandel, Zinfandel Vintage: 1999 Producer: Woodbridge Winery Origin: US, California, Northern California. Status: AVA Lodi Place of Purchase: NTUC Fair Price (Tampines) Description: This wine lingers with the aroma of raisins and nuts in its midst and feels quite silky in the mouth. Fairly sweet but a little tannic, it is slightly difficult to savor at first. Being well-balanced, I think the wine has the potential to become better if kept for a few years more to mature fully. Drinking early (I drunk it at 2002), you will want to make use of its tannicity to complement your steaks and other main courses that contains meat. I would say that this is a standard Zinfandel - not the best wine when compared to those from Sonoma or Napa, but ok to pass by. It costs around $21 so may not be really value for money. Rating: 6.5, an ok wine... but boring at times.
Name: Maison Albert Bichot Bordeaux Type: Red Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage: 1999 Producer: Albert Bichot Origin: France, Bordeaux Status: Appellation Bordeaux Controlee Place of Purchase: NTUC Fair Price (Bedok) Description: This wine is a real turn-off for both beginners and experts alike. Not only is it too tannic for immediate drinking, it is of mere fair quality when compared to much better wines you can buy with the same amount of money. I believe that the merchant selling this wine is doing it for profit-making purposes only, and I have grounds to support this claim - Albert Bichot also sells Vin de Tables, the lowest class of French wines. Hence the merchant may not be trustworthy in its quality control. This is not to say that all wines from the Bordeaux Appellation is no good... but this Bordeaux is definitely NOT value for money when compared to similar Cabernet wines from Australia and California which is of much better quality. It also pales in comparison to slightly more expensive Bordeaux wines you can buy for $20+. Although priced at $19+, you have to avoid this wine at all cost. Rating: 4.5, buy ONLY if you cant fork out $20+ for better wines.
