CBS also seems to have been a participant in a very unpleasant program of electronic surveillance and personal harassment, which has been directed against us for some time. A Quayle associate, William Hudnut of the Hudson Institute, seems to have knowledge of and to have actually participated in that program; its amazing that such a thing could occur, but it seems politicians and public officials can be so wary of a popular news source, such as CBS, that theyll alloweven helpit to break the law.

Postscript (December, 2005): In retrospect, there are probably a few things that could have been better in the above material. But the central idea does still seem valid.
On October 27, 1992, ABC News reported that the Centers for Disease Controls had proposed changing the definition of AIDS to mention cervical cancer. There was also a similar report at about that time in the New York Times. (The Times report, for anyone wishing to look it up, was by Mr. Lawrence Altman.) The new definition required, in addition to the presence of AIDS viruses, a finding of fewer numbers of certain white blood cells.
Being vain, we thought that perhaps--in addition to making the Vice President look silly--we'd helped a little to produce an improved research outcome.
