SO YOU THINK YOU WANT A YORKIE
Before you purchase your yorkie, take a look at some of the links below.  Make sure you've done your homework on this breed & find a reputable breeder to ensure the health & welfare of your new family member.
Just some pointers in searching for your the perfect yorkie for you....
Searching for a yorkie puppy can be a difficult task indeed but if you do your homework and talk to several breeders, you may just find the yorkie that fits your family. First, you want a reputable breeder.  A reputable breeder is one that is actively showing their yorkies, one who gives a written health guarantee in the form of a contract, and one that is at anytime willing to take the puppy back.  Every reputable breeder I know is more interested in the home environment so expect a ton of questions.
When contacting a breeder, give them information about yourself, why you're searching for a yorkie puppy, and want you're looking for in a puppy.  For instance, you want a male yorkie puppy that is around 6 lbs at adulthood and 4 months old.  Maybe include some personality traits as well.  When you get a response from the breeder, expect QUESTIONS. If you give some specifics as to what you want, the breeder will have a better idea of whether they can help you or not with what they have available for adoption.  If they don't have what you want, they may can refer you to someone who can help you.
In your search for a yorkie puppy, you will probably hear the breeder refer to this as an adoption.  To them, the breeder, it is similiar to adopting a child.  You go through a very intense interview to see if you're a suitable home. This is exactly the type of breeder you want because they are more interested in the welfare of the puppies they bring into the world than anything else.  You might also find that some breeders will hold onto their puppies until they are at least six months of age.  There are two reasons a breeder will hold a pup until six months of age...1) they want to make sure they cannot be shown 2) they will spay or neuter the pup before leaving their home. If you're looking for that bonding experience, I can tell you personally that a yorkie will bond with whomever is their caregiver at any age.  From time to time, we place older yorkies(around 6-7 years old).  Bonding is never an issue with a well-bred, well-socialized yorkie who has been loved from puppyhood by their breeder.  If you want to do your own training, a yorkie is an intelligent dog and can be trained at any age.
Male puppies vs female puppies...Most inquiries we receive from people looking for a yorkie want a small female(2 lbs).  With the media, it has made it difficult for reputable breeders to educate the general public that we do not breed for this size yorkie nor do we produce a ton of females.  Most of the general public think that females are more clean than males...I tend to disagree and so do many of my breeder friends or maybe that a female is more loving than a male...this is also a myth.  The average size of an adult yorkie is anywhere from 5 lbs and up...plus we tend to produce more males in a litter than females.  The cleanliness issue between male and females is irrevelant as both can be either or...the temperament between the two genders is also irrevelant.  I find boys to be more loving typically than females...again it just depends on their environment and their breeder.
The advantages of an older yorkie puppy..
1)  They have all their puppy shots...which saves you the money of going to the vet to get those last few shots including rabies.
2)  They are the size they are...from 12 to 20 weeks, it a guessimate of the size of the puppy by the breeder.  Also, they have begun to break in coat texture and color.
3) They have been well-socialized, have begun pottying training as well as grooming, and lead training.
4)  Their personalities are now in tack so you can get a better idea of their actual personality traits.
5) And they probably have been spayed or neutered, which also saves you that expense and care of the puppy after the surgery.

While we all agree that young puppies are cute and adorable, they do tend to go through the ugly-duckling stage from about 4-5 months old and growing spirts as well.
Some questions to expect:  Do you have a fenced in yard? If not, are you willing to put up a fence?   Are you opposed to spaying or neutering?  How will you continue to potty train your new puppy?  Do you own your home or do you rent?  If you rent, are you allowed to have a pet?  Do you believe in crating your puppy while you're not home?  How many hours a day are you away from your home?  How many hours a day are you at home?

I hope what I've written will give you a better understanding and help you find that Perfect yorkie for your family.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]
