Liralen

"The Unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea. She did not look anything like a horned horse, as unicorns are often pictured, being smaller and cloven-hoofed, and possessing that oldest, wildest grace that horses have never had, that deer have only in a shy, thin imitation and goats in dancing mockery. Her neck was long and slender, making her head seem smaller than it was, and the mane that fell almost to the middle of her back was as soft as dandelion fluff and as fine as cirrus. She had pointed ears and thin legs, with feathers of white hair at the ankles; and the long horn above her eyes shone and shivered with its own seashell light even in the deepest midnight." -- The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle

A sylvan creature of pure moon-white. Cloudy tresses of snow-feather locks billow like star-casted nymph-tendrils about the lovely, curling horn 'pon forehead. Dark, endless, ephemeral sea-tinted occuli draw one into them. Movement akin to that which lies far beyond grace, step light and indistinguishable. Ancient, unearthly; cloud-tangle aura of age-old mystery and ethereal, unnameable beauty envelope the pale creature of moon-tide's homage. A seemingly frail, lovely beauty garbed within a simple, short, translucent silvery gown. Billow of cloudy, silvery tresses about pale features, now and again masking dark, ephemeral orbs of unknown hue. Petite figure, moonwhite and shining, glowing as if from within -- an essence of celestial aura. Ivory, seashell horn tapers from pale forehead, glimmering like moonlight, even in the brightest sun or darkest midnight. Quiet, unnatural -- a beauty that cannot be named. Graceful movements, footfalls light, gentle. Otherworldly. Forever cursed to wander the earth enslaved - owned. Body, but never soul, never spirit. She refuses to give in; she keeps her countenance, she remains self-possessed. But now it has all changed. She fell in love and her master freed her. She stayed with her mate until he had to leave the land of Furcadia. He's gone forever; no matter. Someone else has arrived, and Liralen loves her Saifer (who is female) more than anything else in the world. Now, however, she's been sold back into slavery.

Update: Liralen has acquired a new pair of wings, thanks to an unfortunate kidnapping by a group of alien peoples who thought her a deity but kept her in a giant wire birdcage. Saifer saved her. But Liralen did not walk away from the scene unscathed: her new wings are constructed from panes of glittering glass and an array of intricate metal and screws, and she can retract them at will or grow or shrink them in size. She can fly with them, but not very well and for only short periods of time.

    In the sea
The fish have learned to fly
    On a moonlit night
    On wings of silver
As the enchanted stars sail serenely by

    Do they know
    Where do unicorns go?
    Where winged horses fly
    Narwhales lost at sea
    And never seen again

Go, go and ask the magpie
    Where do unicorns go?

    In the trees
the birds have learned to speak
Gaily colored, they keep their secrets
    In a parade of clouds
    Playing hide and seek

    Do they know?
    Where do unicorns go?
    Where winged horses fly
    Narwhales lost at sea
    And never seen again

    Does myth and mystery lie
    Where the unicorns go?
    "In the Sea," Jimmy Webb/America

Liralen is, in actuality, a unicorn, a true unicorn -- a child of a race far older than the moon. But she had not always known that she is a unicorn. In order to save herself as a young, young child, she morphed into the form of a feline. Her false exterior masked her memories and warped them; she became a felinic creature, confused and lost, missing something. Haunted by dreams of a hazy, ancient forest and cloven hooves for feet. A weight on her head. A sense of perpetual purity. Liralen feared these dreams... but now they are past. She had forgotten her past life, but now memory has played its magic and she has taken her half-true form: a unicorn girl. A humanoid unicorn of sorts. Something else, however, plagues her mind. With her newfound sense of self, other memories have returned: she remembers a small boy at her side. A younger brother, now missing. Liralen searches for him constantly, praying that he is alive as well. Perhaps he too was sold into slavery... Tamlin...

She fell in love and knows now what light is. She retains a unicorn's ethereal beauty; she also retains the embodiment of her heritage. Her dark, strange eyes catch any who peer into their fathomless depths. Her horn shimmers and with it she controls the power of healing and clearing poisons, much like the unicorns of eld. Illness touches not her heavenly body, nor can her flesh be marred by scars. She is ever-healed. A single touch of her horn purifies water, or any other poisoned substance, and can even heal others. Everything about her person consumes the soul, hypnotizes, and, indeed, enfolds, as a result of her miraculous, unearthly beauty. She will never die of old age -- she will live forever.
