When you use Windows, you'll notice that it includes a built-in antivirus program called Windows Defender (now called Windows Security in later versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11). Windows Defender can be more of a bother than an aid for some people. As a result, they'll want to turn off Windows Defender entirely. Disabling Windows Defender isn't as simple as it should be, as you'll see in this article. Regardless, ensuring sure Defender is knocked out and stays knocked out isn't difficult.

Why not go with the default setting?

It may appear perplexing that permanently disabling Windows Defender is more difficult than it should be. After all, there is a way to turn off Defender in Windows. "Start -> Settings -> Privacy & security" is where you'll find it. Depending on your Windows version, choose "Windows Security" or "Windows Defender." You'll find an option to switch off certain settings in Windows 10. However, if you read the setting description, you'll notice the flaw. Windows Defender will only be turned off for a limited time. When it senses that it has been turned off for an extended period of time, it will automatically turn itself back on. This implies that if you want Windows Defender to remain deactivated, you'll have to turn it off every time Windows reboots. What a pain! The same settings are available in Windows 11, but you'll have to walk through a few extra menus. Select "Open Windows Security" from the drop-down menu. "Virus and threat protection" should be selected. Scroll down to "Virus & threat protection settings" and click it. Select "Manage Settings" from the drop-down menu. Now, much as in Windows 10, toggle the various choices to Off. Getting to the settings is a headache, but once you do, they'll seem similar to Windows 10. Furthermore, much like in Windows 10, turning everything off is only a temporary solution. This is fantastic if you only need to turn Windows Defender off for a short time, but it doesn't solve the problem of permanently turning it off.

Permanently Disabling Windows Defender

Thankfully, there is a solution to prevent Windows Defender from re-enabling itself. It's not immediately evident how to accomplish it, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to turn it on and off with ease. Just make sure you don't go online without a working antivirus program! Make sure you have something in place to compensate for the fact that Windows Defender has been disabled. You may disable Windows Defender in two ways. The first method is to use the registry, while the second is to use the Local Group Policy window. The Local Group Policy method is typically easier to use, but it is only available on Windows 10 and 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. Don't worry if you don't have any of the above editions or aren't sure which one you have. The registry mechanism can be used to switch off Windows Defender in all versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. Simply follow the steps below, and your issue should be resolved in no time.

Making Use of the Registry (Available for ALL Users)

You can do this by opening the Registry Editor, then selecting "Export" from the "File" menu. Place the copy in a secure location. The registry for the operating system will be opened. This turns off the policy and re-enables Windows Defender. defender-permanent-disable-set When you try to launch Windows Defender again, you'll get the following error message: "Windows Defender has been turned off." defender-permanent-disable-confirmation If anything is still operating, use the same procedure as before to add the following DWORD values to the following folder locations: DisableRealtimeMonitoring is a command that disables real-time monitoring (Set the value to 1) RoutinelyTakingAction is disabled (Set the value to 1) Antivirus is turned off (Set the value to 1) SpecialRunningModes should be disabled (Set the value to 1) KeepAliveService (Set value to 0) It's also possible that you'll need to create three new folders in Windows Defender.
