What I do for work

I'm an electronics engineer. While I studied I swore I'd never touch software. Then I joined IBM, and my first job was developing commercial software on mainframes. Not surprisingly I didn't stay there very long but changed to a job in developing storage chip testers. After a few years of that I turned to software again, particularly building automation and access control. This is where I first got in contact with AIX (the IBM Unix variant) and TCP/IP. I was hooked. This was MY operating system. I spent lots of time playing round with network configurations, setting up servers and such, just for the fun of it and to find out what was possible. Then, in 1997, I had a chance to change to a job in network design, which is where I am now - and very happy about it! IBM sold us to AT&T some time ago so I currently work for AT&T Global Network Services, mostly in the area of firewalls which we set up and manage for customers.
