It was something Alec always looked forward to. He had been giddy since morning. He could smell it: it would snow today. And not just snow, it would be the first snow in this winter.

People would laugh at him if he told them he could actually smell the snow hours before it started to fall. He couldn’t even describe the scent. It was just something pure, fresh, clean, promising – wonderful. Something that made him feel… elated. Peaceful even.

And peace was what he needed. Things were getting out of hand. He felt tired and old and – lost.

And now he sat up there, on the Space Needle, staring up to the sky. Sure enough in that moment, the first flakes started to fall. He had always thought of “snow is falling” as wrong. Because snow didn’t fall. Not that kind of snow. The one that falls when it is very cold and the flakes are tiny and fluffy and light. Each flake unique, not one alike. A piece of art from nature with a best before date. Only shorter than his and pure nature. No messed up DNA.

Slowly and gracefully they danced with the wind. The flakes would swirl, the wind would carry them up a little, to let them fall again; dance partners leading and being led, challenging and coaxing. A frisky and at the same time sensual dance.

Alec closed his eyes, inhaling the cold air deeply. For a moment, he felt purified. As if the snow wasn’t just covering the world under a soft, thick, white coat, but his bad memories, the pain and the hurt, too. The cold wind, the icy flakes gently nipping at his face, teasing him, melting at contact with his warm skin, getting tangled in his lashes and his hair – it felt so good. It felt liberating.

And for a moment, the world was just alright.
