Study of “Fitness for Purpose” condition of the Boiler’s Upper Steam Drum at the Tarnaveni Power Plant (Romania) / 1978

Scope of the Project

The evaluation of the Fitness for Purpose of the Upper Drum. Evaluation of its defectological estate, and its capacity to function on.

Achievements

On the internal surface of the drum was identified a corrosion of type PITTING. One measured the depth of a significant number of pits, using a combined Ultrasound + Eddy Current technique. The analysis of experimental results using Mathematical Statistics, permitted to establish the maximum value of the corrosion depth at 5.6 mm, with a probability higher as 99.8%. Supplementary, were performed micrographs and destructive tests.

Research means used in project

Tests on pits with Ultrasound and Eddy Current;

The experimental results were processed on the special developed Computer Programs written in FORTRAN.

Value of Contribution

Conclusions resulted from the mathematical processing on Computer of experimental results, permitted to evaluate positive the functioning on of the drum. This represented a very important financial saving, including the value of electric energy that could not be produced up to the Upper Drum replacing.

The Nondestructive Testing of the Spheres from Quick Stop System Nr. 2 (using Gadolinium Nitrate) from CANDU Nuclear Reactors /1987 - 1991

Scope of the Project

Developing one experimental setup for radiographs inside spheres (PEHd, Ć 250 mm). Nondestructive examination of spheres.

Achievements

It was invented one technique for radiographing spheres. It was obtained one Invention Brevet for this technique (see “Value of Contributions” below).

Establishing one unitary procedure for NDT of all the spheres on the CANDU Nuclear Reactor.

Research means used in project

NDT examination with Ultrasound and X rays of the mentioned spheres.

The experimental data were processed by one Computer with Special Developed Programs, written by author in FORTRAN.

Value of Contribution

Improving the reliability of the CALANDRIA zone (the Core of the Nuclear Reactor. Decreasing the nuclear accident risk.

Scope of the Project

The evaluation with ultrasounds the presence/absence of cracks inside the reactor’s casing.

Taking the decision Fit/Not Fit for reactor’s functioning on.

Achievements

Developing one new technology for NDT with ultrasound, specific for Chemical Industry, Petrochemical Reactors on Catalysers Base.

Establishing of technical condition for functioning on.

Research means used in project

NDT Examinations with Ultrasound and Eddy Current.

Micrographs direct on the surface of the Catalytic Reactor for analyzing the microstructure of the casing metal.

The experimental results were processed on the special developed Computer Programs written by the author in FORTRAN.

Value of contribution

Mathematical processing of the experimental data led to the conclusion that the reactor may function on.

In this way one may avoid the replacing the reactor with a new one.

Estimated cost for a new reactor was 13 000 000 $.

Scope of the Project

Theoretical and experimental modeling of the vibrations attenuation in one viscous medium. Electronic schemes developing, and laboratory experimental model.

Achievements

Developing and mathematical modeling of new electro acoustic devices.

The construction of experimental transducers as well as the electronic part for data processing.

Research means used in project

Ultrasonic new models using in combination with Eddy Currents.

Modeling using ANSIS Software.

Constructing electronic devices.

Value of Contribution value

From the researches resulted one functional transducer, able to measure levels of viscous liquids in petrochemical tanks, without explosion danger.

It was also developed the electronic interface in order to use and integrate the transducer in Complex Automatic Systems.

 

 

In my activity as Researcher, I managed 35 of such projects. At the end of any research projects, the results were published. They can be found in my list of Published Scientific Works.
