Actor Gabriel Byrne is selling his period-style mews near Dublin city centre. Kate McMorrow reports
Actor Gabriel Byrne is selling the mews house which has been his Irish home for the past five years. Harper O'Grady is quoting €1.5 million for 57 Herbert Lane, a four-bedroom semi-detached house off Herbert Place, Dublin 2.
Mews houses of this calibre are not easy to find so close to the city centre. It's spacious, at 2,500 sq ft, with a leafy garden and safe parking. The actor - whose latest films, Spider and Ghost Ship, are due for release in January - snapped up the house five years ago for around £300,000, then refurbished it from top to bottom.
His brother Tom undertook to re-face part of the facade in cut-stone, adding a Georgian Wicklow granite doorway. Although the mews is a relatively recent structure, the interior has the look and feel of a warm period home. Reclaimed materials used throughout add to this old-world atmosphere. The entrance hall, with a door to the integral garage, opens to a chequered inner hallway. impression of
The downstairs toilet, like all the bathrooms in the house, has old-style sanitary ware and brass fittings.
The kitchen has reclaimed terracotta floor tiles and custom-made cream units with an Aga. There is also a Belfast sink and a full range of integrated appliances.
An L-shaped sitting and diningroom at the back of the house has polished wood flooring and a classic white marble fireplace with curved grate, flanked by thick bookcases. Natural light streams in from two arched windows on one wall, two conventional sash windows on the other, and fanlit French doors opening to the garden.
Wide and curved, the staircase ends in a bright landing with a long roof window. All four bedrooms are doubles. Next to the burgundy-painted main bedroom is a smart dressingroom with fitted shelving.
The main bedroom has an en suite bathroom with an over-bath power shower and old-style fittings. The main bathroom, also beautifully designed, includes a separate bath and step-in power shower.
Another flight of stairs climbs to a huge roof garden, not yet landscaped. With rooftop views of local landmarks such as the Pepper Canister church, Baggot Street Hospital and Haddington Road church spire, tubs and seating could be a priority for a new owner.
When at home, Gabriel Byrne prefers to sit out in the pretty secluded garden off the sittingroom. Here, a terrace is covered with old York flagstones, and there's a hidden nook with a seat at the end of the lawn that also features an old street lamp and water pump.
