Pair of Threes

Who said what? Quotes from a couple of 3-year olds we know... Back to Questions

apatosaurus

Josiah quickly picked up dinosaur names despite parents (at least Gilbert's) total disinterest. They are all dinosaurs to Andrew.

big rig

Josiah loved to watch, play with and read about trucks. Andrew is more of a train boy.

Bob the Builder

Josiah probably would have liked Bob as a three-year old but it was not quite so pervasive then, so this is more of an Andrew thing.

Bumpsy Gumps

Josiah invented this term for cheese blocks and pretzels.

co-workers

Josiah used to make up stories about his co-workers at his construction site. He must have lost his job about the time he started preschool since we haven't heard about them lately.

diapie

Josiah used to carry a cloth diaper for comfort. Andrew drags pillows around the house.

dog rock 'n' roll

Andrew sings more, but Josiah was more for the wild gyrations and loud noises necessary to do the dog rock 'n' roll; this was even before he learned about the song "Who Let the Dogs Out?".

excavator

Although Andrew likes big machines, Josiah was the expert at them. No child's book could get away referring to a loader as a bulldozer.

"Happy Birthday"

For awhile near his third birthday, Andrew could not go a day without talking or singing about birthdays.

hopper car

Although Andrew likes trains, Josiah was more discerning of details. One time we brought him out of the apartment to watch a train go by, but it was a uniform string of brown grain cars. Josiah acted like Adam naming the animals passing by, quietly saying "hoppocar, hoppocar, hoppocar, hoppocar, hoppocar...."

Hotelmotel

Josiah- We took numerous trips, including moving to Washington, when Josiah was three. Andrew has taken fewer trips, much to the relief of jumped-on motel beds.

I beat you

Andrew loves to get Josiah riled up about finishing meals first or putting on shoes first, and often says it even if he is second.

I do it

Andrew- A frequent complaint after being asked to do something such as put on his shirt, then getting unwanted assistance.

I was just joking

Andrew sometimes says this after being exposed as having said an untruth.

ladder

Andrew always notices ladders and likes to climb them.

Let your yes be yes and your no be no

Andrew knows this rule (and sometimes repeats it, which at times has sounded like talk about knobby noses) but frequently either says the opposite of what he means or quickly changes his mind.

lightsaber

Andrew- Of course, Josiah says it a lot but not when he was three.

"Oh where oh where has my little dog gone?"

Andrew sings his children's songs while playing. Josiah used to play to his own soundtrack, something like a repetitive arcade game sound "Doot do DOO doo doot, doot do DOO doo doot, CRASH"

penny

Josiah had little coin recognition ability even in kindergarten; Andrew learned them much earlier.

Peterbilt

Josiah- He could recognize more details about trucks and construction machines then than now.

sleeper cab

Josiah- You probably have gotten the pattern by now. He used to go on trips sitting on the sofa taking turns driving with his puppet Davey Dog. Many of them were to Oregon where triple trailers roam the highways.

train layout

Andrew is now to the point where he plays with the wooden train sets rather than do demolition exercises.

"Yes, Jesus loves me"

Josiah still likes these songs but didn't pick up singing at an early age, but Andrew will sing them even when he is alone.
