Medical Applications for
Carbon Fiber.
Because of its light weight and high strength carbon fiber is
used in many medical applications including prosthetic knees, legs, and oxygen tanks.
It is also used to make “imaging
tables” (tables used for x-raying people) because it does not
show up in an x-ray image, so x-rays can be taken “through” the
table without losing image clarity. The reason it is used in the construction
of prosthetics is because of its toughness and vibration dampening
capabilities, which help to produce artificial limbs that not only have a
longer life, but also require less maintenance than comparable non-carbon fiber
models. Carbon fibers can also be used to repair/replace damaged tendons and
ligaments.
