History of carbon fiber
Carbon fiber is widely believed to
have first been produced by Thomas Edison around 1879. He is thought to have
made the fibers through a process of repeatedly heating cotton, he also took
out a patent for making carbon fibers to use as filaments in his electric
lamps.
It was not until the 1960s that
carbon fiber was first commercially produced, mainly for use in the aerospace
industry. Since then the use of carbon fiber has become more and more wide-spread
until today when carbon fiber is used in everything from jewelry to high
performance car brakes and suspension pieces.
