| Weddings | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There are several superstitions related to weddings: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| * Rice is thrown to give good luck and prosperity. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| * The top tier of the wedding cake is to be kept for a year so that the marriage will last for eternity. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| * If a girl sleeps with a piece of the cake under her pillow, she will dream about her future husband that night (hence the custom of passing out leftover cake at weddings) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| * The carrying of the wife over the threshold dates to Roman times where to trip on your wedding day meant no children would be born. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| * The term "honeymoon" refers to the time period the angry parents of the bride often searched for the stolen bride (one month). Meanwhile, the new couple drank the traditional wedding drink, honey wine. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| * "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". In England, they add the expression, "and a sixpence in her shoe." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Wishing | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Wishes are just about the most superstitious things people try to believe in. In most myths, the thing to wish on is "a first": the first star seen at night, the first robin seen in spring, the new moon, etc. Other items to wish on include: a fallen eyelash, a wishing well containing rain water, shooting stars, white horses, or while crossing a bridge. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Wishbones | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Wishbones are the collar bones of birds that could grant wishes. When two people hold the two sides of a wishbone and pull, the side with the larger portion of the bone gets a wish. This is known as a "lucky break". | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
