Ryoma is a young genius at tennis, and is the main character of the story. Despite his small size and adorable boyish face, Ryoma can sometimes be really sarcastic, cheeky and arrogant. However, he has the skills that give him some 'rights' to do so. He is always confident and never falters no matter how strong his opponent may be. He is also the only freshman regular in Seigaku, and the only one to be able to play tennis with both hands. Being such an outstanding player, Tezuka, president of the tennis team, has high hopes on him. Ryoma's motivation for playing tennis is to defeat his own father - Nanjirou.

Basic information:
Momoshiro is the first Seigaku regular we get to see in the anime. Generally, he is a very friendly guy and is easy to get along with. The only exceptional is his rival - Kaidou, who he has been competing with since forever. He also wishes to be called by "Momo-chan" but no one just does. The freshmen would call him "Momo-senpai" or "Momo-chan-senpai" instead. Of all the regulars in Seigaku, Momoshiro is closest with Ryoma though Ryoma still and always behaves sarcastically to him, and pretty much everyone else. His favorite food is cheeseburger, and sometimes he and Ryoma would compete each other in an eating competition. ^^"

At first sight, Kaidou is undoubtedly the fiercest looking person in Seigaku. He often looks unfriendly from the way he stares at people (partly because of the way his eyes look), but he is in fact a very nice person at heart. He tries to hide his true feelings and/or how he feels about things because he is really shy. Despite that look of his, Kaidou is gentle-minded and happens to be an animal lover (especially cats and dogs). He is also surprising very afraid of ghosts and is one of the most vulnerable ones to Inui's experimental juices. However, in terms of hardworkingness, he is definitely at the top most of the list, training 2.25 times more than the rest.

Here comes the all-time strict captain and pokerface of Seigaku's tennis team. Tezuka's name is known nationwide and his skills are said to be at a National level. So as no doubt, Tezuka is Seigaku's #1 and has never been seen defeated by any of the other Seigaku regulars. Though strict against his team members, he means good for them and truly hopes for everyone's improvements that will lead them to excellency. Unfortunately, Tezuka suffers from an arm injury caused by an incident when he was still a freshman. This injury holds him back from perfection and has been interferring with his tennis ever since. Eventually, he leaves Seigaku temporarily to rehabilitate in Germany.

Basic information:
Ooishi is known as the vice-captain and 'mother' of Seigaku's tennis team, due to his constant worries for the team and its members. By nature he is very kind-hearted and cares for the people more than anyone. Since Tezuka left for Germany, Ooishi feels totally responsible for Seigaku's progress and sometimes gets stressed because of it. However, he is determined to lead Seigaku to victory and will do anything to accomplish it. Ooishi and Tezuka have also been classmates since freshman and are close to each other. Besides tennis, he also plays bowling and is very good at it.

Basic information: Fuji is known to be Seigaku's #2 and a tennis prodigy, like Ryouma. He is highly skilled, but at the same time not at all a sore loser when he does lose (We rarely see him lose though, besides the occasional Tezuka). However, he is very confident of himself and is one with unpredictable height of potential. Perhaps so far, only Ryoma understands the genuine fear of Fuji. Fuji is always putting on the smiliest face, and gets along well with everyone in the team. He can also be rather playful and curious about things when something 'interesting' happens. But beneath that smiley face lies a serious Fuji that shows usually when he gets serious in tennis, or when he is truly angered or surprised. He also has a younger brother - Yuuta, and cares for him a lot. Besides tennis, Fuji also plays pool (billiard) and is really good at it.

Kikumaru is Seigaku's most energetic and playful lad. He likes teasing people and can sometimes be slightly insensitive about it, though usually nothing really bad happens out of it. With Seigaku's fastest reflexes, Kikumaru is good at returning shots from strange postures and noticing/catching fast-moving objects. Unlike most of the other players, he prefers to stay near the net rather than at the base-line. We have never seen him play singles and is most often playing doubles with Ooishi instead, forming Seigaku's best double pairing - Golden Pair. He is also the one who gave Ryouma his nickname - Ochibi, meaning 'Shortie'. (By the way, notice that he never fails to have a band-aid on his right cheek ^_^")

Kawamura hits the strongest serves in Seigaku, which explains why he is a power server. Normally he looks like a timid boy but once he holds a racket nothing can stop him. That is the result of his other 'side', which is the total opposite of the usual him - fully pepped up and driven in excitement (burning mode), and will start talking and shouting in nonsensical English. ^_^" However, not only a tennis racket will turn on the same effect. So far, even a baseball bat and a table lamp work. (Haha!) Kawamura's father own a sushi restaurant and when he is free he is always there to help his father with his business. When Seigaku wins a victory, they are sometimes invited over to the restaurant to celebrate a feast. Besides tennis, Kawamura has also 6 years of experience in Karate but stopped after he switched to tennis.

Basic information:
Inui is one with the most peculiar way of playing tennis - Data analysis. He is all set with balanced strength and speed, and all that's left to earn him his victories is his calculations and predictions based on his data which he collects in his notebook as he observes how his team mates and rivals play. He is also very mathematical and believes his calculations to be accurate. Even Ryouma finds his style of playing annoying and avoids playing against him whenever possible. However, Inui's calculations aren't always as accurate and logical as he thinks it is, and it often fails him whenever he applies them to other things other than tennis (Example, billiard & bowling). (Haha!) When Inui lost his place as a regular in the first 50 episodes or so in the anime, he became Seigaku's manager, making training menus for everyone and observing the team's progress. His training menus, which include threatening everyone using his deadly (supposed to be good for your body) Inui juices, prove to be very effective, especially when his 'life-threatening' juices give the people their motivation. He is also the one responsible for helping Kaidou master his Boomerang snake.
