Evangelion
Evangelion- It started out as a mecha show with some dry, very dry, very weak comedy, then dramatically turned into an exploration of human psychology.   This is the best anime I've seen because of the depth it has, and the charater development it has.  The main character is not this incredibly heroic guy, who saves everyone and takes all the glory. In fact, it's the opposite.  Half the time, when he fights, you don't know what he'll do or even if he's willing to fight.  I'd like to think that he couldn't save anybody in the end except for himself and the second protagonist, the girl in the right.  He freaks out a lot and stuff.  One thing  I have against this show is that the fights between the Evas and Angels are just not right.  Half the time, the angels are beaten by a special method spontaneously thought up in the last few seconds the pilot had time to think.  Everyone says that the ending was stupid but that's not true.  The TV ending wasn't really the ending of the show.  It was the process of character instumentality and their psychological stand point, that you needed to understand the real ending, the movie endings.  Whoa!  Was the movies a shock for me! This show originally was rated PG-13 but the director of the movies turned it NC-17, because of disturbing deaths of main characters, lots and lots of GORE, and because of it's depiction of the end of the world.  Needless to say I didn't heed the rating.  I still flinch at the scene where one of the NERV personel was crying and dragging a dead body of a friend, when a military soldier sees her and shoots her with a maching gun.
