| CUSTOM CLEAR BUMPER LENSES words by John Beerman 1990 LS coupe Cost: free Duration: 1 - 2 hours Material: drill, needle nose pliers, screwdrivers, and tinsnips Precedure: 1. Unscrew the two screws and remove the bumper signal. 2. Unclip the back and remove the bulb casing so that the lense is free. 3. Look down and you should see the 'U' shaped amber lense - this is your enemy. However you don't want to scratch the box shaped diffuser below it. (The next few steps could be performed differently, but as long as you get the amber out its all good.) 4. Take the drill and drill two lines of holes so the amber lense is divided roughly into three parts. Next take a regular screwdriver and try to connect the holes by prying it. Use larger and larger screwdrivers until the whole line of holes connect and the amber diffuser is divided. 5. Once this piece is divided you should use a screwdriver to push the tabs on the side so the amber piece slips into the middle of the box diffuser. 6. Grab a piece with the needle nose pliers and cut them with the tinsnips so that you can pull them out. 7. Repeat until all the amber is removed. 8. To remove the amber dust fill it with water, shake, and drain. Repeat until al amber dust is flushed. 9. Dry. 10. Reinstall. Be careful to get the gasket in correctly so water doesn't leak in. If you can still see moisture in it the next day, dry them out again. You may wnat to change the bulb to either a hyperwhite bulb or an amber bulb that has silver coating on it. Also, you can get a LED bulb that won't look amber until lit. Note: You can also cut the lense along the front seam and just pull out the amber but it may be hard to seal. If this seems too much, another option would be to tint the whole lights with blackouts. This looks very nice. |
