CUSTOM COLD AIR INTAKE (using stock elbow)

Cost: $60
Material: K&N air filter (E-1796), dryer vent tube, sheet metal, drill, and screws

Precedure:

1.  Use the stock elbow and leave the plastic insert in it.  The K&N filter will fit right on the end.

2.  Turn it a little, plug the vacuum port, drill another slightly undersized (rubberized elbow didn't need additional gasket) and insert vacuum port.  It will sit slightly rubbing the plug wires and battery.  Then bent a little sheet metal where the original air box was located.

3.  The cable from the throttle cam to the automatic transmission wants to sit right where you want to put the elbow for your cool new expensive filter.  Just take off the bracket and let it sit on the elbow, attach it to another bracket behind the battery to help stiffen it.  If you don't tie it down your tranny will slip.

Creating Air Flow
Buy a dryer vent tube with an attached plastic vent cap wedge on one end.  Paint it black for stealth.  Get down in front of the driver's side wheel and take off every screw that holds this flat horizontal vented plastic cover between the tire and the bumper.  Take out preheater so you have space for vent tube.  Cut circle the size of the tube in flat plastic cover (right on top of vents).  Place panel and tube up into car to measure and cut tube to length.  Add seal to top of tube (I used an old door seal) so that it rests up under the sheetmetal where the intake pickup is located.  Drill 4 holes in the plastic cover and rivit or screw vent wedge facing forward to scoop the incoming air.  Replace all those dang screws.  Done.

Comments:

That panel under the bumper in front of the wheel reveals an air box.  This air box is actually the intake resonator.  Just unscrew all the bolts, unplug (tape off wires).  This resonator is just to make the intake quieter.  It serves no performance purpose for the motor.
