A blog of our thoughts and travels

As you know, we are taking this trip on a budget.  Along the way, we have picked up some helpful advice from books, other travelers, and learned some ourselves.  Some advice is listed below, and we will try to update this as we go:

1.  Book travel plans (i.e. train rides) and hostel/hotel stays a few days in advance.

2.  Don't be afraid of hostels.  For two people with a private bath, they have run at about $100/night - which is typically at least half that of a hotel, especially with the dollar as weak as it is.  They are typically low maintenance stays, with moderate accomodations - a bed, a shower, and a dresser.  But we're here to experience the cultures of the various cities and countries, not to get pampered at the Westin.

3.  Many countries do not have standard A/C.  If you get to a non-airconditioned room in a multi-floored hostel, ask for a room on a lower level.

4.  Pack as light as possible, and send home extraneous weight as you collect gifts and books.  I'm sure I can write a whole blog on packing light.

5. Buy an international phone card before you go on your trip, and plan to spend some money at internet cafes.  The internet is not a standard ammenity at many hotels out here.
