Texans far from home
A blog of our thoughts and travels
April 4, 2008 - topics: travel, surviving grad school

I am now a firm believer in Spring Break.  I've been having a rough time with stress recently, and decided today that I needed to skip town and have some "me" time.  I stayed at school and worked all through spring break, but I think that it is a necessary time off for any student.  I'm sure I'll be posting lots of thoughts about stress in the next 6 weeks.

Anyway, so today I hit the road for Charlotte, NC.  My first and only experience with Charlotte was when we drove through on the way from Texas to Chapel Hill.  While we stayed in a sketchy hotel in a bad part of town, we saw a moving truck painted white with the following written in 2-foot tall black font on the sides: "On Crack? Pregnant? Need Help?  Call 1-800-Off-Crack." I swear this is true! I cannot make things like this up.  Luckily, my experience today has been nice.  Charlotte is a nice mid-size city that appears to be on the up.  I explored downtown, had some nice sushi at a place called Nikko Sushi, and did some shopping at a cool outlet mall called Concord Mills.  But of course, leave it to me to find the most ghetto mall in Charlotte - I got there, and decided to turn around.  If I told you the name of the mall, you would think that I'm racist, so I won't.

There are some storms blowing in tonight from the West, so I'm tucking in with some knitting and bellydance costuming projects for the night.  Maybe I'll think about my thesis, I hope not.
