Top 10 Reasons to Take Space Matters
By Tom Cronin
--As some of you know, FYS 31 (aka FYS 27 during the 1997-98 school year): Space Matters: Readings in Science Fiction is being offered for the 1998-99 school year at Drake University. Because of this, I have compiled a list of reasons why freshmen should take the course.
10 - Star Wars: Watch it again for the first time
9 - You get to be the first of your friends to read Egalia's Daughters. The book is taught in other Drake courses, but you get to be the first to read it.
8 - If you take the course, rumor has it that a senior seminar based on the first year seminar will be offered. Just goes to show that you just can't get enough of this class.
7 - Getting adjusted to calling your professor by her first name
6 - You will never catch yourself saying "mankind" again without hearing Vibs' voice shouting "humankind" at you.
5 - You get to brag to everyone, "Yes, they DO teach classes on science fiction!"
4 - The course's primary point to ponder: If Star Wars is the answer, then what is the question? If you're observant, you'll discover this question before the end of the semester.
3 - Whenever a long reading assignment is due, half of the class discussion is spent talking about who got the least amount of sleep.
2 - Phallic Symbol Dan is being replaced with a less obnoxious phallic symbol.
