GOOD GOLLY, IT'S A GIG! by DeDe James

Appeared in Dragon Music Magazine, Nov 2002

Good Golly! It's A Gig! - The first time ever gig organized by FYI (For Your Information) entertainment was held at No Black Tie pub. Although only five bands played; the flyers were rawkin-featuring '50s sexy pin up artist, Gil Elvgen, keepin' this flyer sexy, smoochin' and so hoooot!!! To know about FYI entertainment just visit their website at; http://wannabe.at/thegig or to contact them and get on their mailing list just e-mail at; [email protected].

Soundcheck was on 6.00pm and the gig started at 7.30pm started by the hard rawkin' band named Yes 2 Kapitalism (Capitalist-man... such a hey-man-me-is-computer-freak and thanks baby for the creative name!). This three-piece band lead by Saiful Onisan (of Iodine39) on guitar and vocal, Khai on bass (from Khaimano) and all the way from Japan, lovely Asai on drum. Damn kewl to have a woman on drums!! This band is only one month old and before this gig went for jammin' thrice. Although struck by a fever, Saiful Onisan with his black flying-V guitar still gave his best shot and commitment, Khai being hyperactive and energetic on stage with his lefthanded 5 strings bass. Big cheer given to Asai-san for the fast drumbeat inline with guitar and bass!! They covered Utada Hikaru's "Kiroro", Atomic Kitten, George Michael's "Careless Whispers" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time", with their own punk rock version. Where on earth did they get this superb idea on punk rockin' these pop songs. Cool gila!

Flatline was next. This band is more grunge+alternative. Smashing Pumpkins wannabe? The nicely combined guitar and drumbeat created an adrenaline rush... tapi their bassline rulllesss!!! The music was catchy with good vocal and beat. Perfect and pleasant to the ears! But I think they need more showmanship skills. They seem to focus only on their instruments. They started with their new song, "Space", "To The Movies" and "Something To Live By". If you wanna hear their songs and wanna know more about them, just go to their site at; http://artists.mp3.com/artists/111/the_hondo_drive.html. On their site it was stated that, "Flatline's debut EP will be available for purchase at the Good Golly show". But sadly, takde pun? But if you wanna get their EP entitled, "Love you, My Overdose". Just e-mail them at; [email protected]. Their line up are; Jordan Hafez Suleiman as Vocals and Guitars, Joshua Wong on drums, Rauf Fadila as second guitars, Jacob Lyon as bassist. Ok... enuff about Flatline.

Next was Fallen Leaves. The Tone Urban Top 20 band. Fallen Leaves, a progressive+grunge+punk rock band. They started with "February Desert", "Filler No.1" (the song was on the Tone Urban Top 20), "Ever After" and "Cloudy First Impressions". They got 2 sessionists that night, if you notcied, that was Smek from Sgt Weeners Arms on guitars and a girl on drums.

So 2 girls on drums that night! Gurls RULE!! Get their EP, "The Beginning Of Change" and it contains 8 songs. Overall, they were so powerful especially Smek who had his own guitar skilss! Hail Smek Down!! All songs sound like a combination of Smashing Pumpkins, MatchBox 20, the Counting Crows and Dave Mathews Band. Download their mp3s and find out more at www.mp3.com/Fallen_Leaves.

Tempered Mental took their places after that, and Janggoat was missing in action! Mesti pegi toilet lagi. Dunno what happened to him, so I did 2 jobs that nite. Writing and taking photos! Ok... where were we just now? Opsss... Tempered Mental, rite? So according to their website (http://temperedmental.cjb.net) Tempered Mental means; Tempered - having or showing the specified temper and Mental - of the mind. The band was formed only recently around February 2002. They kicked ass with their smashing songs, "Mistrial", "Space In Time" followed by "Trust", "Undone", "Pure" and a new song, "Honesty". The music sounded like Smashing Pumpkins and Tool and they even played Smashing Pumpkin's song, "Cherub Rock" after being requested by the audience. But my favourite song was "Space In Time". The Song keeps playing in my mind till now. Very nice and catchy. At the show, they were also selling their 1st demo, only RM 5.00 and it contains 3 songs, and its worth buying! Melina with her 5-strings bass and powerful voice, Khoo on guitar and funny Jimmy on drums. And they are all currently studying  in ICOM. No wonder lah best gila! I think they were the band of the day!

Party time, introducing Khaimano, a 3-piece ska/punk/reggae/funk/jazz band from the Damansara/PJ area. I love this band sososoo much. They started with "I'm Not Chinese". A song about looking Chinese when you're actually Malay and what you have to put up with everybody. (according to their website) and when u hear the lyrics, it's not about discrimination at all! So don't be confused! And of course people will misunderstand by their looks. They all look Chinese especially the bassist, MoJam and Khai himself! And Drake, the drummer with his black-ska outfit that nite. 2nd song was, "Saturday Morning", full punk rock song with a good beat and started with drums (this song started with a drum beat) and Khai entertained the audience with his jokes??? The next song was everybody's favorite, "Cannot Get It Up" with a catchy tune and funny lyrics! Khai forgot the lyrics in the middle of the song and shockingly they also played one slow song called, "Backboard Man" and '50s tune cheeky song called "Undergraduate". this was the first time they played this song after Mojam discovered the bass chord of the song! Congratulations, Mojam!! Not forgetting cover songs by Elvis, "Twist and Shout" and "Great Balls Of Fire". I love the part when Khai shouted, "Shakin' on babey!" Very nice with their own version. Last song for that day was "Golden Boy". This funk song is based on true story was inspired by a Japanese cartoon movie. Check them out at www.khaimano.cjb.net and www.mp3.com/khaimano. So talented Khai played guitar for Khaimano and bass for Y2k! (Did I mention earlier? Mesti dia penat gila!) This was the best gig ever! So much fun! Only RM10 for 5 talented bands. And now I'm waiting for Good Golly gig volume 2! Mintak lah ada!! Uhhh... (thanks Ayu for helping me) Sekian...
