Two days passed and there was still no sign of Hotohori's mirror.
Hotohori, Tasuki, and all of the palace inhabitants looked in every
room, every drawer, and every possible place that the mirror could have been
placed. In desperation, Hotohori even drained the pond that was in the
beautiful palace gardens, hoping that the mirror would be at the bottom
or wedged into the murky, wet mud. Unfortunately, it was not and Hotohori
retired to his room at the end of the day, tired and disappointed. As
he entered his room, he carelessly tossed off his shoes that made his feet
ache and he fell facedown onto his bed, letting out a large sigh. He
burrowed his head into his bed's soft pillows, his face feeling the soft fabrics and
linens that covered them. Hotohori wrapped his arms around a large
pillow and pressed it closer to his face. His eyelids started to suddenly grow
heavy and before he knew it, he was fast asleep and he started to dream…
"Hey Hotohori, close your eyes!" Miaka giggles as she hid her hands
behind her back. Hotohori smiled brightly, his eyes glowing.
"What's behind your back Miaka? Is it for me?" He smirked, waiting
for Miaka to produce whatever she held behind her. He stepped closer to
her, but she backed away quickly.
"Wait a minute! I'll show you, now close your eyes…" She waited
for him to close his eyes so that she can surprise him. Hotohori, seeing that
he wouldn't win this fight, closed his eyes, a smile still across his
face. Miaka, seeing that his eyes are closed, she pulls out her hands,
revealing a
small handheld mirror.
"Can I open my eyes now?" Hotohori asked impatiently.
"Yes, now you can." Miaka responded. Hotohori opened his eyes and
in her
hands, he saw the smallest mirror he has ever seen.
"Miaka…it's, so small…where did you get it?" Hotohori asked
questionably, looking at the small compact mirror.
"Its from my home, ya know, in the other world." Miaka placed the
mirror in his hand. As she did so, her hand brushed lightly against his.
Butterflies could be felt in both of their stomachs. Hotohori examined the mirror
closely and smiled brightly.
"I love it, I will treasure it always." He gazed at her with
happiness and gratitude in his eyes. Miaka just smiled.
"I thought you would like it. You could use it when you are
traveling around and you need a mirror to look in or something."
Hotohori looked at the mirror again and then looked at Miaka. Both
of them had smiles on their faces. Hotohori opened his arms and wrapped
them around Miaka, holding her in a tight embrace.
"Thank you Miaka…for everything."
Hotohori eyes suddenly open up and he looked around. Everything was
darker in the room than before. He also found his vision to be blurry.
He then realized that he has been crying. He wiped his eyes and rested his
head on the pillow again. Hotohori then let out a small, painful sigh,
saying only one word.
"Miaka…"
