Rating: PG Author's Note: There's a little happy and a little sad in this one. There's a mention of breast cancer in here (no, none of the main characters have it) so if that upsets you in any way, for whatever reason, please don't read this. Also, because of one little thing in here I feel the need to preach safe sex again! And abstinence is the best policy! OK, that's enough. Happy reading! Angels Part 12 - Angel Eyes by Ruth Friday 8:26pm Drew and Briana's house Lewis and Angel sat in Drew and Briana's livingroom in their usual place: Lewis sitting in the chair and Angel in his lap with her legs dangling over one arm of the chair. Their honeymoon had ended a few days before and what a honeymoon it was! They had spent the first few days in their suite on the boat, coming out to grab a meal now and then or watch a sunset...or a sunrise. Now they were at Drew and Briana's because they had all decided to get together for the evening to watch some movies, drink some beer and basically just be together. Lewis and Angel were going to use the occassion to make a little announcement to everyone. They were pregnant! They had known since a little before the wedding but hadn't wanted to tell anyone just then. There was enough going on with the wedding and it was still too early. Not to mention the lecture Angel would have gotten from her father about getting herself pregnant before she was even married. She hadn't mentioned how far along she was to her father when she called to tell her parents the news earlier that day and her mother wasn't going to mention it. Of course he'd figure it out eventually but she hoped it wouldn't matter by then. Angel was sure Briana knew. The past couple of times Angel had refused a beer and opted for a glass of water or a decaffeinated soda Briana had looked at her knowingly. She never said a word though. They were sitting around waiting for Kate to show. She had called an hour ago and said she was heading out the door but she still hadn't shown. Everyone was getting a bit worried. Lewis distracted himself by running his fingers through Angel's hair, over and over and thinking about the day he had discovered he was going to be a father. When he arrived at her place he found her sitting at her diningroom table with a strange look on her face. She was holding something in her hand. "Honey, are you all right?" Lewis asked. Angel looked up at him with that look still on her face that he couldn't decifer. She held the object in her hand out to him and he took it. It was long, white and had a plus sign on it. "I don't get it," he said. "Well," Angel began, "you pee on that - " "Augh! You peed on this?!" Lewis said as he held it out away from himself. "Not on the part you're touching! Will you listen to me?" "Sorry," Lewis said. "Go on." "You pee on it and then you either get a minus sign or a plus sign. Either negative or positive," Angel stated. Lewis looked confused. "Minus or plus sign? Negative or -" Lewis stopped short. " - positive?" The meaning of it had dawned on him. He looked at the pregnancy test in his hand and then back at Angel. "Are you saying...?" Angel smiled and nodded her head. Lewis sat down at the table and set the test down. He looked thoughtful for a moment. "Lewis, I -" Angel didn't get to finish her thought. Lewis had swept her up off her chair and was spinning her around. "Yes!" he exclaimed. "We're pregnant!" Angel laughed as she hung on for dear life to his neck. "You'd better stop or I'm gonna hurl!" Angel teased. Lewis hastily put Angel down. "I can't believe I'm gonna be a father," he said softly. "Have you told your parents yet?" "Hell no!" Angel said. "It's too early and I thought, since you're the dad, that you should be the first to know." Lewis smiled. "I'm the dad!" he said giddily. "Yes, now you can put all that experience you had raising Oswald to good use," she joked. "Very funny," Lewis said. He bent down and kissed her gently. "Hey, when you're pregnant can you still..." "Yes, I can still..." Angel said with a smile. "Even right here on the diningroom table if you want," she said, her voice lowering. Lewis grinned wickedly as he picked her up and sat her down on top of the table. "Did I mention yet that I love you?" he said. "Shut up, Lewis," Angel commanded as she drew him down for a kiss. Lewis had been staring at Angel and pulling his fingers through her hair for a full ten minutes when she finally decided to say something. "What are you staring at?" she said playfully. "I'm just wondering what I did in my life to deserve you," he quietly said into her ear. Angel smiled and kissed him on the cheek. "I'm worried about Kate," she said. Briana came out of the kitchen shaking her head. "No answer at her place," she said. "Maybe she's on her way." "I hope so," said Drew. "Well, I'm getting another beer," said Oswald. "Anyone?" "I'd actually like some water," said Angel. Briana gave her that look again. "I'll get it," said Lewis. He stood up, carrying Angel with him, turned around and set her in the chair. He followed Oswald into the kitchen. At that moment, Kate finally walked through the door. "Kate!" said Drew. "Where the hell have you been?" Kate didn't say anything. She walked over to the couch and plopped down. She looked pale. "Kate?" Drew said, concerned. "Will you get me a beer, Drew?" Kate asked. "Yeah, OK," said Drew. He got up and walked to the kitchen. "Kate what's wrong?" asked Angel. Briana sat down on the couch next to Kate. "Yeah, what's wrong?" she asked. "I should wait for the guys to come back in," Kate said. "All right," said Briana. She looked over at Angel who shrugged. The guys came back intot he room. Drew handed Kate her beer and sat next to Briana and Oswald sat on the floor in front of Kate. Lewis put his beer and Angel's water on the cocktail table, turned and picked up Angel and sat them both back in their original position. Angel reached over and grabbed Lewis' beer for him and then grabbed her own water. "Geez, Lewis," began Drew, "do you you dress and feed her too?" Oswald chuckled and Lewis gave him a gentle kick. "No!" Lewis said defensively. "I...just don't want her to...what difference does it make?" "Hey, didn't you say you wanted to tell everyone something?" Drew asked Lewis. "I don't think now is a good time," Angel said, flicking her eyes toward Kate who was slouched on the sofa, looking at the floor. She looked up. "Don't let me stop you," she said. "If it's good news I could use some." Lewis and Angel looked at eachother. "Well, OK," said Angel. Briana sat forward on the couch. "I've been waiting for this," she said with a grin. Angel stuck her tongue out at Briana who laughed. "Lewis, why don't you tell them," Angel said as she turned back to him. Lewis cleared his throat before speaking. "Well, we had a little surprise not too long before the wedding -" "I knew it!" Briana cut in as she pointed accusingly at Lewis and Angel. Angel started cracking up. "I think there must be some sort of psychic bond between pregnant women," Angel said. "You're pregnant!" Drew, Kate and Oswald all yelled at the same time. "Hey, I was gonna tell them!" Lewis complained. Angel gave Lewis a quick kiss on the mouth to placate him. "Sorry, Sweetie," she said, batting her eyes at him. That always reminded him of the first time they met. She had batted her eyes then and he had immediately fallen in love. He smiled, completely forgetting what he had been complaining about. "So how far along are you?" asked Briana. "About 10 weeks," Angel responded. "I'm due in June." "Oh my God," said Drew. Everyone looked at him. "Lewis is gonna be someone's Dad." Oswald looked at Lewis. "Wow. That gives me hope," he said. "Funny, Oswald," Lewis said while giving him his best "screw you" face. "Well congrats, you two," said Kate. She tried to smile but then burst into tears. "Kate, what's wrong?!" Briana said, putting her hand on Kate's shoulder. Angel removed herself from Lewis' lap and went to Kate. "What is it, Kate? What happened?" Angel asked. "It's my Mom," Kate managed to say between sniffles. Lewis stood up and went to the couch as well. "What about your Mom?" he asked quietly. He looked at Drew who shrugged. Kate inhaled a couple of times before she answered. "She's...she's..." Kate gulped and took another breath. "She's dying," she finished, so quiet the others weren't sure they heard right. "Oh my God, Kate," Oswald said, "she's dying?" Kate nodded. Angel covered her mouth and then threw her arms around Kate, hugging her. Briana followed suit from the other side. Drew, Oswald and Lewis looked at eachother sadly. They had known Kate's Mom, it seemed, forever. This news seemed impossible. Oswald grabbed a napkin off the cocktail table and began to wipe away the tears on Kate's face. She stared at him like a wide-eyed child, her lower lip quivering. "It's OK, Katie-Bear," he said softly as he wiped away her tears, "we're all here for you." Katie-Bear. He hadn't called her that since...but she didn't have the energy to wonder about it. She took a couple of deep breaths and got herself under control. "I'm sorry, you guys," she said. "I didn't mean to break down like that. We just heard this wonderful news and I had to ruin it." "It's OK," Angel reassured as she held Kate. "Why, Kate? Why is she dying?" "Breast cancer," Kate said matter-of-factly. "She ignored it and now it's too late. They gave her 6 months. A year if she's lucky." "Oh God, Kate. I'm sorry," Lewis said as he placed a hand on her shoulder. "Yeah, me too," said Drew. He reached over and smoothed the back of Kate's hair. "We're gonna help you get through this." Kate nodded. She stood up and walked to the bathroom to grab some tissue for her runny nose. She came back out and looked at everyone. "Thanks you guys," she said. "You're the best friends I could ever have." Angel smiled and went to Kate and hugged her. Briana followed. Lewis and Drew also walked over and got in on the hug. "Hey, save some for me!" Oswald said as he jumped up and joined in. The six of them stood silently in a big group hug in the middle of the livingroom. Briana thought she could hear Kate crying again. "Oh, don't cry, Kate," she said. "Everything will be fine." "I'm not crying!" Kate said. It then became apparent that she had been laughing. "I bet we look ridiculous!" "Ah, who cares?" said Drew, grinning. They stood there for several more seconds. "You know, we're going to have to stop this eventually," Angel finally said. "Do we hafta?" whined Oswald. Angel shrugged and laughed. "I suppose not right this minute!" she said. Suddenly, Lewis began moving the whole group toward the bathroom. "Lewis, what are you doing?" asked Angel. "I hafta go to the bathroom," he said, sounding a bit desparate. The arms holding Lewis to the group suddenly released him. "Thanks," he said, sounding a little disappointed at being rejected. He ran to the bathroom. When he came out, the whole group was still hugging. He shrugged and joined back in. "Hey, Angel...Lewis...congratulations again," said Kate. "I can't believe Lewis is gonna be someone's dad!" she said, laughing again. Oswald did his best not to laugh but failed miserably. Drew followed close behind and Briana joined him. Finally, Angel had to give in and laugh as well. "Et tu, Angel?" Lewis said, a smile forming on his lips. He finally chuckled. "Yeah, I guess that *is* pretty funny." "Oh, Honey!" giggled Angel. "We know you'll make a great dad, don't we?" she asked the whole group. Everyone nodded. "Yeah, of course," said Drew. "We just have to give you a hard time cuz... you're Lewis!" "Yeah, thanks," Lewis said. "Hey guys," began Kate. "Let's not stay inside tonight. Let's go to that place where they're giving the hayrides and they have cider and donuts and stuff! You know the place I'm talking about?" "Oh yeah!" said Oswald, sounding like an excited little kid. "Let's go!" The group finally broke the hug and looked at eachother. "Thanks, guys," said Kate. "Hey, aren't those hayrides just for kids?" Drew asked as he grabbed his coat. "Eh, don't worry," said Lewis. "We'll just kick the little buggers off and jump on ourselves." Angel turned and gave Lewis a reprimanding look. "What, I'm kidding?" Lewis said innocently. Angel turned back around and Lewis pantomimed kicking kids off the hayride for Drew and Oswald. "Ready?" Kate said from the door. Everyone filed past her out into the crisp fall air. Oswald was the last to walk out. Kate stopped him. "Hey, Oswald?" "Yeah, Kate?" he said. He looked at her and it was the first time she had noticed that hard look he usually gave her was gone. That one he had given her since she broke his heart. "Um, nothing. I just - " Lewis suddenly appeared back at the doorway. "Are you two comin'?" he asked eagerly. "Yeah, sorry," said Kate as she walked out the door. "What's going on?" Lewis asked. Oswald shrugged. "Beats me," he said. Lewis shrugged two and the two left, closing the door behind them. They took a deep breath of the fall air. "Ah, it's a good night to be alive isn't it?" Oswald asked Lewis. "Sure is, Buddy," replied Lewis. "Are you two coming or what?" bellowed Kate. Lewis clapped Oswald on the back and they ran off toward their friends. Stay Tuned for Part 13...
