(A4e3c) destructive human embryonic stem cell research

Destructive human embryonic stem cell research is another form of terrorism. The added dimension is the fact that it is also a form of cannibalism. Human beings are created and then killed in order to provide spare parts for other human beings. This bill unless amended will allow research and experimentation on newly conceived embryos which will result in their death. The bill purports as well to ban cloning, but in point of fact does not do so. It would appear that our nation is sliding into the moral abyss of the Nazi years with their total disregard for innocent human life. May God help us all. The following article by Chuck Colson is an excellent read on the dangers to all of us when life becomes devalued. ******* Warmly, Roy Hamel ******* BreakPoint cultural commentary with Prison Fellowship's Chuck Colson http://link.crosswalk.com/UM/T.asp?A1.25.10545.1.57660 ******* February 27, 2003 ******* 'A Short Philosophical Hop, Skip, and Jump'(The Threat of Embryonic Research) Charles Colson ******* Not long ago, I listened to perhaps the most powerful and eloquent speech I have ever heard. It was delivered by Joni Eareckson Tada at a Prison Fellowship banquet. Many of you, of course, know Joni's story: As a teenager, she dove into shallow water and broke her neck. For thirty-five years, she has lived in a wheelchair, a quadriplegic. ******* It was this fact that gave her speech such power. You see, the subject of her speech was embryonic stem cell research, which has been dangled out as a "miracle cure" for dozens of different medical conditions-including spinal cord injuries. Indeed, one the most aggressive proponents of this research is another quadriplegic: actor Christopher Reeve. Both Reeve and Joni know what happens during embryonic stem cell research: The embryo-a tiny human being-is killed as stem cells are plundered for use by the already born. ******* Reeve is willing to overlook this inconvenient fact; Joni is not. Unlike Reeve, she understands where such research will lead. ******* Consider what Joni said: "The weak, the frail, quadriplegics, the infirm, the handicapped, the elderly have never fared well in cultures which view life as a commodity." Look what happened just more than fifty years ago in Germany, she said, when doctors first cast a cold eye on people whose lives they considered not worth living. "The first to be carted off down the long, dark, midnight hallways of institutions were the defective, or the handicapped, or the mentally disabled." Specifically, they were "disabled people," Joni said, "who had no visitors, no friends, no one to speak up for them." ******* "And now we have the philosophers of this age," she said, "people like Peter Singer insisting that folks like those with mental handicaps have no rights." ******* And she added: Our dream of solving all medical problems is turning into a nightmare. "Our society doesn't seem to have a place for those who suffer. We want to avoid [suffering,] ignore it, eradicate it, medicate it. We have such contempt for suffering, and it's only a short philosophical hop, skip, and jump to where you begin to have contempt for suffering people. People who strain Medicare, people who drain the grandkids' college funds, people who contribute nothing more than bills to society." ******* But, as Joni pointed out, it is not just the disabled who are at risk. "The lives of all of us are jeopardized when life can be bought and sold, copied and replicated, altered and aborted and euthanized," she warned. We are all vulnerable "in a society that thinks nothing of creating a class of human beings for the purpose of lethal experimentation and exploitation." Those are powerful words, given with such conviction. ******* Of course, we all want cures for disease and disability, as Joni said, but not at the price of human dignity. She knows, as Reeve does not, what a bad bargain it is. The promise of a cure is seductive, but it becomes a death warrant. ******* I'd like nothing better than for you to listen to this incredible speech. Then give it to your neighbors. Call us at BreakPoint (1-800-995-8777), and we'll tell you how to get a copy. ******* Unlike Christopher Reeve, Joni knows that there are worse things in life than being handicapped. There is the destruction of human dignity through cloning. And there is the creation of a cultural climate where first the weak, the small, the sick, and the suffering, and then all of us are carted down the "long, dark, midnight hallways." ******* ---------- Take action: Urge your congressman to support H.R. 534, the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2003. Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, also the current Chair of the Catholic Organization for Life and Family, and Rev. Ron Mercier made the presentation on behalf of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. ******* In the presentation they pointed out that the government's draft legislation "would permit under licence embryonic stem cell research on embryos who remain after fertility treatments, embryos who are called 'spare' or 'surplus'." They categorically rejected the measure saying, "No amount of public benefit or healing can ever justify the deliberate killing of a human being. No human being, including the embryo, should ever be used as a means to an end; no human being, no matter how tiny, can be killed to help another; no human being should ever be considered as 'surplus' or 'spare'." ******* The CCCB presentation pointed out allowing stem cell research on the embryos who remain after fertility treatments is "inadvertently encouraging the creation of extra embryos, thus subverting the very welcome prohibition against creating embryos for research purposes." The CCCB welcomed the prohibition against all human cloning including so-called therapeutic cloning. Quoting Australian religious leaders the CCCB presentation said that therapeutic cloning "produces a laboratory embryo with no parents or guardians, in fact no one concerned to protect his or her interests." ******* See the full CCCB presentation at: http://www.cccb.ca/docs/cccbpresentation-Nov26.htm *********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 3 NBC TELEVISION PROGRAM ACCUSED OF BIASED REPORTING ON STEM CELL RESEARCH ******* From: [email protected] ******* Date: Sun, 8 Aug 2004 06:04:31 EDT ******* http://www.lifenews.com/bio412.html ******* by Maria Gallagher, LifeNews.com Staff Writer, August 6, 2004 ******* New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- NBC's "Dateline" newsmagazine program is being accused of biased coverage, following a recent report on stem cell research. ******* Critics charge that a recent "Dateline" segment promoted embryonic stem cell research, while ignoring the groundbreaking successes of the ethical alternative, adult stem cell research. ******* A number of bioethicists, church leaders, public officials, scientists, and others have condemned embryonic stem cell research because it involves the destruction of living human embryos. ******* In contrast, using adult stem cell research, no human embryos are killed. ******* In response to the "Dateline" segment, the Family Research Council's Tony Perkins said, "NBC's 'Dateline' hit an all-time low in reporting ... when it covered the stem cell debate without even mentioning the successful, ethical stem cell research from adult stem cells." ******* The program featured an interview with Ron Reagan, the son of former President Ronald Reagan. Ron Reagan and his mother Nancy have been advocates of embryonic stem cell research, while Reagan's other son, Michael, has been a strong opponent of the experiments. ******* "Next time they (NBC) should interview Michael Reagan who actually sits on the Alzheimer Foundation board of directors and who defends his father's position of protecting life from its inception," Perkins added. ******* President Reagan was staunchly pro-life, defending the right to life from conception to natural death. Pro-life leaders say there's nothing in the President's record to suggest he would have supported embryonic stem cell research, since it involves the taking of a human life. ******* Perkins also notes that "Dateline" made a grave error in its approach to the ongoing debate over embryonic stem cell research. ******* "The show's interviewer questioned the newly-appointed "scientist", (Ron) Reagan, about why Catholics and Evangelicals were so closed-minded in stopping the use of embryos for research," Perkins said. ******* "The success of over 40 diseases responding positively to the implantation of adult stem cells and zero successful embryonic cures seemed a point too far for this 'news' program," Perkins added. ******* Meanwhile, in a letter to NBC, physician Frank Joseph chastised the network for the piece, saying it was clearly slanted in favor of embryonic stem cell research. ******* "Adult stem cells have already been curing many diseases. Embryonic stem cells have not cured anything yet. As a matter of fact, embryonic stem cells have caused tumors in mice. Why didn't 'Dateline' inform the public about the great advances in adult stem research?" Joseph wrote. ******* Joseph added, "It is obvious that you are putting politics above the health of Americans and you are trying to make President Bush look like a cold-hearted person." ******* LifeNews.com contacted "Dateline" producers for comment, but did not receive a response. ******* In 2001, Bush stopped federal funding of embryonic stem cell research beyond the lines of cells that had already been created. ******* Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry has made a campaign issue out of embryonic stem cell research, claiming that it holds the key to curing a number of diseases. ******* However, a number of bioethicists refute that claim, saying that initial research involving embryonic stem cells has proven disastrous. ******* Even Ron Reagan, who made a pitch for such research at the Democratic National Convention, has admitted that embryonic stem cells would be ineffective against Alzheimer's disease, the disease his famous father was diagnosed with in 1994. ******* In contrast, Joseph says, adult stem cells have successfully treated a host of diseases, including cancer, anemia, bone and cartilage problems, corneal scarring, strokes, skin grafts, and autoimmune diseases. ******* Joseph says there's even hope that adult stem cell research could provide a cure for blindness within the next five years. ******* And, Joseph points out, there are a number of people who have their own adult stem cell success stories to tell. ******* For instance, Laura Dominguez was a quadriplegic at age 16 after a car accident damaged her spinal cord. With the aid of her own adult stem cells, she can now walk with the help of braces. *********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 4 STEM CELL DEBATE RAGES ON ******* Western Catholic Reporter - Week of October 11, 2004 ******* Confronted with the choice of life from another's death this author would say 'No'. ******* MY GLASS IS HALF FULL ******* By MARK PICKUP ******* New Jersey is the first and only American state to create and fund a stem cell research facility. This is good. Stem cell therapies hold such promise for treating conditions like Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, arthritis, diabetes and multiple sclerosis, to name a few. Stem cells can be derived from a vast number of sources from bone marrow to umbilical cords, from skin to cadavers to embryos. Only embryonic stem cell sources are controversial because they require the killing of a human embryo. ******* ETHICAL DILEMNA ******* The New Jersey research program is expected to be involved with embryonic stem cell sources: this creates an ethical problem for many seriously ill people. How can a person opposed to abortion - a person who knows the biological fact that human life begins at conception, and believes in the equality of human life, accept a therapy that requires the taking of another human life? Why would a government fund research that it knows will exclude a constituency of its citizens from benefitting (like many devout Catholics)? ******* The most promising stem cell research to date involves non-embryonic sources and that would benefit everyone. So why would New Jersey allow tax funding to go to fetal stem cell research? ******* We should not be too hard on New Jersey. The Canadian government is willing to give tax dollars to embryonic stem cell research too. What if fetal stem cell research develops a cure or effective treatment for progressive multiple sclerosis? My MS is slowly destroying me. ******* Only my left arm remains unaffected by disease. ******* Should I look the other way in order to be delivered or helped, knowing my deliverance is on the back of another? ******* For more than 20 years, I have publicly supported human rights and protections for every human being beginning at conception to natural death. ******* What an interesting quandary. What a diabolical temptation. ******* No! Sadly I would have to turn from a hideous therapy that capitalizes on unwanted human life. It is better to remain in my half-dead body than to resurrect lost function and lose my humanity. I don't want deliverance from degenerative multiple sclerosis at that price. It is too high. At the end of my life, how would I face the God who knows both consumer and consumed? ******* Catholic teaching is unequivocal about the value of human life beginning at conception: "Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2270). ******* Then, "The inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutive element of a civil society and its legislation" (CCC, n. 2273). ******* If this is true (and it is) then I must not accept embryonic stem cell therapies. An embryo must die to glean its stem cells, so that I may live. ******* My Christianity and Catholic faith expect more from me than compromising fundamental moral principles for the sake of self-interest. ******* Christ calls humanity to a higher standard. Jesus calls us away from seeking affirmation and toward affirming the worth of others at every stage and state of the life spectrum. He did not die for just some - he died for all in all generations. I believe this with all my heart. At this stage of advanced multiple sclerosis, it's all I have left that really matters. ******* STAND FIRM ******* This month I will be in New Jersey to deliver the keynote address at a critical life issues conference sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen. I will take the opportunity to encourage my fellow Catholics to stand firm in unshakeable faith and testimony to the inviolable dignity of every human life. Human rights begin when human life begins. I will remind them that the Church teaches: "Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil; but live as servants of God. Their loyal collaboration includes the right, and at times the duty, to voice their just criticisms of that which seems harmful to the dignity of persons and to the good of the community" (CCC, n. 2238). ******* A society that feeds on the discarded bodies of unwanted embryonic human life engages in evil. It is right for Catholics of Canada and New Jersey, and all good citizens of good will, to encourage and expect their governments to fund only non-embryonic stem cell research. ******* I will encourage the attendees of the New Jersey Conference on Critical Life Issues to courageously stand in the face of a culture of death in favour of a culture of life under the lordship of Jesus Christ. *********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 5 ARNOLD ENDORSES STEM CELL INITIATIVE ******* From: [email protected] ******* Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2004 ******* By Paul Elias, ASSOCIATED PRESS ******* SAN FRANCISCO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger broke with the state Republican Party on Monday and endorsed Proposition 71, a $3 billion bond measure that would fund human embryonic stem cell research. ******* Schwarzenegger endorsed the measure while answering reporters' questions at Point Lobos State Reserve in Monterey County, where he was presented with a plan to protect California's coastline. ******* "I'm very much interested in stem cell research," he said. ******* The endorsement was highly sought by the Yes on 71 campaign, but comes at some political risk for the governor. ******* During last year's recall election, Schwarzenegger campaigned against California going deeper in debt. But he then promoted a $15 billion bond deal that voters approved in March. ******* If Proposition 71 is passed, it will provide California researchers with nearly $300 million annually for 10 years but cost a total of $6 billion to pay back over 20 years. ******* The endorsement will put him at odds with the state Republican Party, which officially opposes Proposition 71, and perhaps even the Bush administration, which has curbed funding of the research. ******* On the other hand, Schwarzenegger has said he supports the technology. His father-in-law, Sargent Shriver, is in the early grips of Alzheimer's disease, which Prop. 71 supporters say could someday be treated using stem cells. ******* Stem cells are created in the first days after conception and are the building blocks of life. Some researchers hope to turn stem cells into replacement tissue to treat a variety of diseases and injuries. But many social conservatives oppose the research because it involves destroying microscopic embryos. *********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 6 CALIFORNIA VOTERS APPROVE TAXPAYER FUNDING OF EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH ******* From: "LifeNews.com" ******* Date: Wed, 3 Nov 2004 ******* For news updated throughout the day, visit LifeNews.com. ******* Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- California voters Tuesday approved a measure that would require taxpayers to spend $6 billion to fund research involving human cloning and the destruction of human life. With little oversight or monitoring, the funds will specifically be used to clone and kill human embryos -- days old unborn children -- for scientific research. Voters approved Proposition 71 by a 5,616,268 (59.1%) to 3,894,561 (40.9%) margin after proponents spent millions touting the controversial measure. "California has voted to support embryonic stem cell research jeopardizing both their moral and financial standing," stated Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council, in reaction to the vote. "Californians have voted to use their money to finance highly controversial science that intentionally destroys nascent human life and will likely create cloned embryo farms," Perkins added. The result is a concern for those who oppose the grisly practice because it could lead to similar votes in other states. The California Nurses Association joined pro-life groups, Catholic and other Christian leaders and even some abortion advocates and environmentalists in opposing the measure. Some opponents of the measure are talking about the possibility of setting up a new watchdog group to keep the agency that will disseminate the embryonic stem cell research funds accountable. *********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 7 BRITISH PRIME MINISTER TONY BLAIR WANTS U.K. TO LEAD STEM CELL RESEARCH ******* From: "LifeNews.com" ******* Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2004 ******* For news updated throughout the day, visit LifeNews.com. London, England (LifeNews.com) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair says he wants the European nation to lead the world in the controversial field of embryonic stem cell research. Acknowledging the controversy of destroying human life to advance science, Blair said the research had the potential to save the lives of those who suffer from a number of diseases. "We will not stop the research. The potential benefits are huge. I do not think it is right to deny people suffering from these illnesses the hope of a cure," Blair said in a speech. "Our ambition is for the UK to become the science capital of the world. We are well on the way. I believe we can be the best," Blair said. However, embryonic stem cells have failed to produce a single cure despite more than two decades of research. On the other hand, adult stem cell research, using cells from ethical sources that don't destroy human lives, have already produced more than 120 treatments for numerous diseases and ailments. The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children responded to Blairs call for Britain to become 'the science capital of the world' by appealing to the Prime Minister to promote policies that respect the human right to life. "Embryonic stem cell research involves the exploitation and destruction of a human embryo, can never be justified and is legally questionable when there are ethical alternatives available that show considerable promise," John Smeaton, SPUCs National Director, said in a statement. *********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 8 WISCONSIN GOVERNOR WANTS $750 MILLION FOR EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH ******* From: "LifeNews.com" ******* Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2004 ******* For news updated throughout the day, visit LifeNews.com. ******* Madison, WI (LifeNews.com) -- On the heels of California voters approving a $6 billion measure to finance unproven embryonic stem cell research, Wisconsin's governor wants the Badger State to spend $750 million on the controversial science. Governor Jim Doyle announced plans Wednesday to use a combination of public and private money to conduct research that would destroy human embryos to harvest their stem cells. That money would build on the nearly $1 billion the state has spent on medical research facilities over the last decade. "Other states, like California, are trying to play catch-up and build from scratch what we already have," he said. Some of the projects Doyle wants require legislative approval while others the governor can begin on his own through moving money in the state budget. The state's leading pro-life group said it will work feverishly to make sure the legislature does not approve taxpayer funding of research that destroys human life. "Wisconsin Right to Life supports the use of tax dollars for the use of ethical research which does not involve the creation and/or destruction of human life," said Barbara Lyons, Executive Director for Wisconsin Right to Life. "We will work with legislators to insure that Governor Doyle's proposal is amended to exclude unethical research." *********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 9 EMBRYONIC STEM CELL LINES CONTAMINATED, UNUSABLE FOR RESEARCH ******* From: "LifeNews.com" ******* Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2005 Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The only embryonic stem cell lines that qualify for federal funding are contaminated with animal cells that make them unusable for research or potential treatments. When creating the stem cells lines by destroying human embryos, scientists injected the human cells with mouse cells to help them grow faster. The process contaminated them. The human immune system is built to reject foreign cells something that gives adult stem cells an advantage and it would seek out and destroy the contaminated cells if injected into the human body in a treatment. Dr. Ajit Varki, a specialist in cell biology at the University of California, San Diego, made the announcement about the contamination over the weekend. "Even worse, in the process of killing the contaminated cells, the patient might have a bad reaction," Varki explained. "It could be like receiving a bad blood transfusion." The full details of the problems are unveiled in the January 23 issue of Nature Medicine magazine after first outlined to a panel of stem cell research experts in October. "They use cells from mouse embryos, called 'feeder cells,'" Varki explained. "They also put -- as in most culture mediums -- serum [blood] from animals to help grow the cells. ******************************************************************************************************** ******* item 10 EMBRYONIC STEM CELL DELIRIUM by John Horvat II ******* Tue, 14 Jun 2005 ******* from Dr. [email protected] ******* This article can be seen on line at http://www.tfp.org/TFPForum/TFPCommentary/stem_cell_delirium.htm ******* Most have already seen the stem cell news stories. A handicapped person is shown in a wheelchair suffering from his malady. The picture changes to a laboratory where research is taking place. The message: embryonic stem cell research will cure the poor suffering person. The screen then focuses on a conservative politician who raises cruel moral objections to the procedures. ******* It must be noted right from the start that even if embryonic stem cell research did help treatment and even cure diseases, it would be totally unacceptable since it kills human embryos. ******* However, the tragedy of such media portrayals lays not in the cruelty of such moral positions but the falsity of the conclusion. Embryonic stem cell simply will not cure the poor handicapped person. There is no scientific evidence to support this conclusion. However, the viewer is deliberately left with that impression. ******* Such tactics are symptoms of what might be called an embryonic stem cell (ESC) delirium, a syndrome that causes patients to cling obstinately to such false conclusions and compulsively black out any other opinion. ******* Never mind that human life is destroyed! Never mind the fact that such research is not yielding results! Never mind that the conclusion is unscientific! Don't even think about the possibility of sin. All these are minor considerations. ******* Nothing seems to stop embryonic stem cell delirium. Bring up the facts and the media only cry all the louder: embryonic stem cell research must go forward. ******* Just consider the facts. ******* No approved treatments have been obtained using embryonic stem cells. None at all. No human trials are being done. After 20 years of research, embryonic stem cells are not being used to treat people. Scientists have spent a whole generation to find out that embryonic stem cells are unreliable. Nature itself seems to react against their use since they tend to produce tumors, cause transplant rejection or form the wrong cells. ******* The record is extremely clear. These cells are not working and are even hazardous. There are no proven success stories in 20 years! There are no promising prospects for the near future. However, that does not stop the media's cries. It does not stop celebrities infected with this delirium from demanding: embryonic stem cell research must be supported. ******* The worst thing is that ESC sufferers will not even rationally consider other alternatives. Adult stem cells have proven themselves time and again. ******* These cells can be obtained without killing human life. They are practical and ethical. Typically drawn from the bone marrow of patients, they have an excellent track record being used clinically over 30,000 times. Researchers are constantly making breakthroughs in this area. ******* Private investors are funding adult stem cell not embryonic stem cell research. They are making startling advancements using adult stem cells in treating Parkinson's disease, juvenile diabetes and spinal cord injuries. ******* Stem cells from neo-natal cord blood have also proven successful. More than 6,000 patients and 66 diseases have been treated. The results are promising and exciting. ******* And yet the conclusion from those with ESC delirium is not to pour public money into these very successful treatments but those that have failed. State governments across the country are climbing over each other to get on this failing bandwagon throwing good money after bad. Billions, not millions, of dollars are being invested on this pipe dream that is really fast becoming a nightmare. ******* Bad economics cannot deter them. One would think sufferers would at least be concerned by women whose health could be harmed by egg harvesting methods. However, not even women's heath issues, so precious to feminists worldwide, seem not to affect the heartless insensitivity caused by ESC delirium. ******* Alas, perhaps researchers would do well to search for a cure for this illogical malady. Tragically, there are no regenerative stem cells that can help. ******* No, ESC delirium is not a biological or even psychological malady. It is the sad by-product of our culture of death. It is a moral illness that deadens the sensitivity to a moral law inside the soul. It causes society to lose its bearings and overturns all moral barriers that stand in its way. ******************************************************************************************************* ******* item 11 SUCCESSFUL ADULT CELL TRIALS FOR BLINDNESS LEAD TO POSSIBLY DANGEROUS EMBRYO STEM CELL EXPERIMENTS By Hilary White ******* From: "LifeSiteNews" ******* date: Tuesday June 5, 2007 ******* LONDON, June 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) A team of researchers at University College Londons Institute of Ophthalmology plans to begin trials with embryonic stem cells to develop a routine surgical treatment for a disease of the eye that has previously yielded to adult stem cell treatment. ?******* Dr. Lyndon Da Cruz, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields eye hospital in London, pioneered the successful technique to treat Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) using differentiated cells taken from the patients own eyes and transplanting them into the damaged areas of the retina.?******* AMD affects to some degree one quarter of those over 60 in the UK and is one of the leading causes of blindness in Europe. ?******* Although Da Cruzs technique was successful in trials, the number of cells it is possible to harvest from the patients eye is limited and the procedure takes two hours to complete. The switch to embryonic stem cells, the researchers assert, will simplify the procedure and make it possible to develop a routine clinical application that takes 45 minutes. ?******* Successful ethical treatment with adult stem cells and differentiated cells is becoming commonplace in the news, but thus far, despite media claims, no cures have yet been found for any illness or injury using stem cells derived from living human embryos. Moreover, using stem cells derived from another person, the embryo, causes ongoing problems for the recipient patient with immune system rejection of the introduced tissue.?******* Embryo stem cells that are cultured in the lab have been known for years to produce wild and uncontrollable effects, including genetic changes that may be linked to cancer.?******* In 2005, Dr. Aravinda Chakravarti a geneticist at the Institute of Genetic Medicine of Johns Hopkins University in a report in the journal Nature Genetics, wrote that of the stem cells derived from embryos, 22% had mutations in mitochondrial DNA and 50% had major deletions or amplifications in the DNA. ?******* If it turns out these cells really do become unstable over time, Chakravarti warned, then that would put limits on the practical life spans of the cells and their usefulness for therapeutic purposes.?******* Despite this, London Project to Cure AMD intends to develop a surgical therapy using embryo stem cells. Professor Peter Coffey, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and director on the London Project, said, Using stem cells - which are far more adaptable - can only improve success of what has already been achieved and in addition establish this as a global therapy.?******* The goal is within five years to have a cohort of patients to put the cells into, added Professor Coffey. ?******* In addition to the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, the project is being undertaken by Moorfields Eye Hospital and the University of Sheffield sponsored by a 4 million anonymous donation.?******* Embryo Stem Cells Genetically Unstable after Long Cultivation?http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/sep/05090604.html *******************************************************************************************************
