******* (Michael Coren is saddened to see his quiet, suburban London hometown has gained notoriety for its resident terrorists and an innocent bombing victim.)
******* I never imagined that the extremely ordinary and somewhat anonymous English town in which I was raised would become a microcosm of the western world's contemporary malaise. But Ilford, on the eastern outskirts of Greater London, is now painfully symbolic.
******* Officially part of the county of Essex, it is actually an East-End overspill area, generally populated by people who have managed to work their way out of the inner city into something a little better.
******* It has always been a home for immigrants. It had a sizable Irish population and the largest working-class Jewish community in Britain. My dad was a member. He was a cab driver, the son of east Europeans, and raised us in a small but comfortable home.
******* There is subsidized housing in Ilford but no genuine poverty. The essence of upper working and lower middle class British life. Tea on the table at 4 p.m., soccer on Saturdays and lots of time in front of the telly. Gloriously normal.
******* Ilford began to welcome tens of thousands of Indians and Pakistanis in the 1970s but nothing really changed. The care, for example, shown by my parents' Indian neighbours to my ailing mum when my father died was exquisite. This was the new Britain, the new Ilford, and it worked like the old one.
******* Yet not quite. One of the first westerners to be kidnapped and beheaded by Islamic fundamentalist terrorists in Pakistan was the American Daniel Pearl, a moderate whose family now travels the world pleading for peace and understanding.
******* The leader of the gang who arranged Pearl's kidnapping was from Ilford. His parents evidently did better than mine because he went to one of the town's private schools. For all his hard work, my dad could never have afforded such privilege.
******* So, a good and prosperous home, an expensive private education and all of the benefits of British tolerance and freedom. Nothing, in fact, to cause anyone to be angry. Yet this man planned the sadistic murder of another human being.
******* Just a kilometre away from where he grew up is one of Ilford's many synagogues. Earlier this month the rabbi, the cantor, the president and the warden of the Ilford Federation Temple were walking home from a service when they were attacked by seven young Muslim men. Shouting "You're dead Jews" the youths kicked and punched the four Jewish leaders, none of them young or able to put up much resistance, and hit them with bottles.
******* Then we have Anjem Choudary, former British head of Al-Muharjiroun, a hard line-Islamic group. This Ilford man's home was raided by anti-terrorist police in 2003. He and his organization refuse to condemn the recent bombings in London. "It is completely irrelevant, this question of condoning and condemning," he has said. "As long as the root causes remain unaddressed there is every possibility of more attacks."
******* Sultana Parvin is also from Ilford and speaks for Hizb ut-Tahrir, a body that wants all Muslims to unite in a single Islamic state under the law of the Koran. After the London terror attacks she said that, "the whole discussion that should be taking place is why British foreign policy is so cruel."
******* Killed on the underground
******* Lastly there is Susan Levy. Yes, Susan Levy. This 53-year-old secretary was also from Ilford but moved with her husband and two sons to north of London. Her husband is a hard-working cab driver, rather similar to my father.
******* Susan Levy was blown apart and killed on July 7 on the underground, the first named victim of the London massacre.
******* My hometown. Where I was happy and secure and loved and content. Where people got along and, though not always the best of friends, did not kill or maim or destroy. Just one little town, not very different from any other such place.
******* God stand up for Ilford, for England and for western civilization. Agents of doom and fundamentalist storm troopers will not destroy what is good and fine, no matter how hard they try. Forgettable hometowns will now never be forgotten.
