Abortion advocates decried the decision that ends abortions on unborn children who are physically and mentally disabled because they have no properly developed a brain. ******* The Wednesday vote by the Supreme Federal Tribunal ends the practice, which has been permitted since July. ******* A largely Catholic nation, Brazil prohibits virtually all abortions, except those necessary to save the life of the mother or in rare cases of rape or incest. ******* In July, one judge on the Brazilian court issued an order that allowed women to have abortions when their babies suffered from anencephaly, where the baby fails to fully develop a brain stem. About 650 such cases occur each year in the South American nation. ******* The liberal government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva favors abortion in some cases, but the nation's top attorney argued against the abortions in front of the court. ******* Humberto Vieira, president of Brazil's Pro-Life and Pro-Family Association, said so-called eugenic abortions could lead to allowing other abortions in the future. ******* Abortions of babies with anencephaly "[open] the way to other types of abortion, for example, of the physically or mentally disabled, and even healthy human beings who, however, do not fit the criteria approved by eugenic groups," Vieira said. ******* Vieira said he is worried that health concerns for women having abortions are left out of the debate. ******* "The abortion of anencephalic offspring, as any other kind of abortion, has very serious consequences for a woman," he explained. "A woman is not exempt from the consequences of abortion by the mere fact that she bears an anencephalic fetus." ******* The decision isn't going over well with some Brazilians. The National Confederation of Healthcare Workers, a union that backs abortion, says it wanted the court to allow the abortions. ******* The Brazilian National Bishops Conference joins Vieira's group in opposing the abortions would rather the legislature tackle the issue rather than allowing courts to decide. ******* Anencephaly is a congenital anomaly characterized by failure of development of the cerebral hemispheres and overlying skull and scalp, exposing the brain stem. This condition exists in varying degrees of severity. ******* Most infants who have anencephaly do not survive for more than a few days after birth. ******* Before coming to the nation's high courts, individual judges would issue sometimes conflicting decisions on whether or not to allow the abortions to occur. ************************************************************************************************************************ ******* item 2 NEW PRESIDENT OF CHILEAN BISHOPS CONFERENCE SAYS: "WE WILL BE PASSIONATE DEFENDERS OF LIFE" ******* From: "CNA news" ******* date: November 29, 2004 ******* SANTIAGO, Chile, November 29 (CNA) - Bishop Alejandro Goic, the new president of the Bishops Conference of Chile, announced this Friday that the bishops of the country shall not back away from defending life in all of its stages. ******* Reporting on the bishops Plenary Assembly which concluded last Friday, Bishop Goic said that in response to the present social and cultural condition of the country, We will defend the value of life in all of its stages. The bishop recalled that in the past, during a very painful period, we were criticized for defending human dignity under attack from torture. Now we are criticized for other reasons, but we will not back away from our evangelical and human zeal for defending life in all of its stages, for the good of our country. ******* Life is sacred from the moment of conception until the final encounter with God. We shall be passionate defenders of life in all of its stages, but obviously in an environment of dialogue in a pluralist context, Bishop Goic stated. Later he warned that the country should prepare itself to accept with maturity the conclusions forthcoming from a national commission on political imprisonment and torture. He called the report a step forward towards national reconciliation and explained that the bishops have expressed their well-wishes and gratitude to Bishop Sergio Valech and the other members of the commission that is preparing the report. ******* Responding to a question about Chiles new law allowing divorce, Bishop Goic reiterated the position of the Bishops that, while they accept the positive aspects of the new law, indissoluble marriage is good for Chile. ******* We will do everything possible to make Catholics and all people of good understand the value of unity and indissolubility in marriage, while showing respect at the same time for those who have not been successful, he added. ******* HOLY PRIESTS ******* Bishop Goic later said that the main theme discussed by the bishops at their meeting was the need for ministry to priests, and that one of the conclusions was the drafting of a letter of encouragement to priests in all of the dioceses of Chile. ******* Chile needs holy priests today. Inasmuch as we priests live out the Gospels beyond our smallness, we do a good to our country. Our hope is that priests will be very faithful to the Lord and very close to the people, he concluded. *********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 3 ARGENTINIAN BISHOP ANNOUNCES MARCH FOR LIFE AND FAMILY ******* BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, November 29 (CNA) - Bishop Ruben Frassia of Avellaneda, Argentina, announced last Saturday that the Church will promote a huge march for life that will take place in Buenos Aires on December 11. ******* We want to have the pleasure of saying: we are more and we want to support things that are vital to us, such as the family, marriage between a man and a woman and the defense of life from the moment of conception in the mothers womb, the bishop said. ******* From this Diocese of Avellaneda-Lanus, we wish to invite everyone to get involvedThis will be an ecumenical event. Therefore it is not necessary to be Catholic or to be believer to participate. ******* The purpose of this march, he went on, is not to pick a fight with anybody, but we do want to say that we wish to live these truths and, therefore, let us live them out and help us to live them, and for this reason we wish to be witnesses. They are the values of non-violence with security, respect for returning to things that are traditional and that belong to us. ******* I invite everyone to participateLets allow ourselves to be bothered a little bit and to participate, to make our voices heard, Bishop Frassia said. *********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 4 JUDGE SAYS "NO MORE" MORNING AFTER PILL IN EQUADOR ******* Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 ******* From: "CNA news" ******* QUITO, Ecuador, December 6 (CNA) - A judge in Ecuador ruled in favor of a petition filed by a group of lawyers against the morning after pill, saying the drug cannot be sold in the country until its abortifacient nature has been disproved. ******* Federal Judge Francisco Alvear said the pill could not be distributed or sold in Ecuador. The petition against the drug was filed by Jose Fernando Rosero, representing the group Lawyers for Life. ******* In his ruling, Alvear called the right to life the cornerstone of judicial order, and he said that ruling extends to all drugs that contain the same chemical compounds and attack human life. ******************************************************************************************************** ******* item 5 ARGENTINEAN GOVERNMENT WITHDRAWS RECOGNITION OF BISHOP ******* From: [email protected] ******* date March 21 - 2005 ******* ROME, Italy, March 21 (CNA) - The Director of the Holy Sees Press Office, Joaquin Navarro-Valls, told reporters this weekend the government of Argentina could be violating religious freedom if it withdraws its recognition of the Bishop of the Military Diocese, Antonio Juan Baseotto. ******* Asked by journalists about the governments announcement it would withdraw recognition, Navarro-Valls said, Normally I do not comment on these types of stories, but he noted that, regarding the news reported by the media about the actions taken by the President of Argentina in the confrontation with Bishop Antonio Juan Baseotto, we are awaiting an official communication from Argentina to the Supreme Pontiff, who has named him Ordinary of the Military. ******* Obviously, warned the Vatican spokesman, if the pastoral ministry of a bishop legitimately appointed by the Holy See according to the norms of Canon Law and the applicable accords is prevented from being exercised, it would mean a violation of religious freedom that goes way beyond the established accords. ******* On Friday, March 18, the government of Argentina revoked the decree recognizing Bishop Baseotto as Ordinary of the Military, which was originally signed in 2002 by then-President Eduardo Duhalde. ******* The confrontation began when Health Minister Gines Gonzalez Garcia expressed his support in February for the legalization of abortion in an interview with the Argentinean newspaper Page 12. This prompted Bishop Baseotto to send him a letter three days later warning that he was coming close to defending murder by his support for abortion and his distribution of drugs known to be abortifacient. ******* The bishop also noted that seeing Gonzalez publicly distribute condoms to young people brought to mind the Gospel passage in which our Lord affirms that those who scandalize the little ones deserve to have a millstone tied around their neck and to be thrown into the sea. The media seized upon the bishops statements and suggested he was threatening to throw Gonzalez into the sea. ******* Along with the complete support of the Argentinean bishops, Bishop Baseotto was also publicly supported by Cardinal Renato Martino of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo of the Pontifical Council for the Family. ******* Despite a statement by the bishops in which Bishop Baseotto expressed his regret for the confusion and bad feelings caused by the mentioning of the Gospel passage and his clarification that he did not intend to encourage any act of violence or to offend the authority of a member of the national government, President Kirchner sent a formal petition of removal from office to the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Adriano Bernardini. ******* The total support of the bishops and criticism of the Minister of Health forced the government to publicly state that it had neither the desire nor the intention of legalizing abortion in the country. Response of the bishopThis Saturday the Executive Committee of the Bishops Conference of Argentina issued a statement lamenting the lack of prudence with which the conflict has been handled. Any possible problem, they added, should be resolved constructively through dialogue, which prevents contradictions from worsening and enables paths to solutions to be found. ******* We find it deplorable that this hurried and unilateral decision obstructs, precisely in these days of Holy Week, the normal functioning of the ministry entrusted by the Church to the Military Bishop, who has under his immediate pastoral care a specific community of the people of God spread out all over the country. ******* Lastly, we hope a solution to this disagreement is found soon and that the incident is just a passing episode, the statement concludes. *********************************************************************************************************
