******* item 1 LETTER TO CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE OF CANADA EXECUTIVE RE: CWL CLARIFICATION STATEMENT
******* From: Sissy von Dehn
******* To: [email protected]
******* Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2003 to
******* Catholic Women's League of Canada, President: Marie Cameron, Executive Members.
******* Dear Madame President.
******* Thank-you for responding to concerns of membership regarding the official CWL Discussion Paper presented to the House of Commons Standing Committee on marriage and same-sex unions.
******* The Clarification Statement of April 17 did state that the CWL of Canada, " stands firm in its committment to the bond of matrimony between one man and one woman to the exclusion of others". That would have been enough to stand on its own from the original Paper. Members see the credibility of this statement eroded, by engineeering social language in the original Presentation, which clearly accomodated same-sex uinions.
******* The CWL of Canada went beyond its mandate to furthur encourage the government to, "establish a seperate legal process for recognizing same-sex unions which outlines their entitlements, benefits, and responsibilities" . By " same-sex" the CWL implied homosexual-sexual unions. Since we do not recognize such unions we have no business to suggest or facilitate how they are to be "established" in the secular jurisdiction.
******* The CCCB Paper did refer to "adult interdependent relationships" which the government "may see fit to address", but it did not contain the CWL's comittment to recognizing/validating the homosexual-sexual relationship.
******* The CWL of Canada does not recognize abortion, and to-date, has never suggested to the government how to accomodate and validate the abortion lifestyle, regardless of "peer presssure" or threats. We do our best to offer help to avoid such choices and consequences in Christian charity.
******* Unfortunately the Clarification Statement did not retract the accomodation and validation of same-sex unions that remains in the original
Presentation . This leaves us still compromised as members across Canada. I sincerely hope that you can continue to accept this concern, and retract the "urging" to government levels to "establish a seperate legal process" for unions that run counter to CWL's firm committment and definition of marriage. Even if the secular jurisdictions do not accept our definition ,we are to stand by it regardless of pressures and legislations.
******* Yours truly, Cecilia von Dehn (CWL Member OLPH, Vancouver)
