The Third Doctor

1970 - 1974

The third Doctor came about as the result of his trial on the planet Gallifrey; the Time Lords sentencing him to exile on Earth in the twentieth century with a changed appearance. So naturally, the Doctor that stepped out of the TARDIS was very different from the one viewers had seen the episode before.

With this third personality, the joker side of the second Doctor came right to the forefront, and the Doctor became an out-going man who loved to be in on the action, be it by chasing wrong-doers by hovercraft, water-sled or futuristic car, or forcing the Master, who was introduced in this Doctor's era, into temporal stalemate, using the TARDIS.

This incarnation of the Doctor loved gadgets, and his sonic screwdriver was never far from his side, as was his pride and joy, his yellow roadster, Bessie.

He retained the same morals as his previous incarnations; he hated to see any form of life suffer, and was always on the side of the oppressed, even if they were suspicious and hostile against him.

While on Earth, the Doctor joined up with the British branch of U.N.I.T. (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), led by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, as their scientific advisor and he helped them to defeat a host of creatures, including Axons and an infestation of plague-carrying giant maggots.

It was in this incarnation that the Doctor fdirst encountered the Master, a rogue Time Lord, and the two Time Lords developed a love-hate relationship through their respect for each other, even though they were totally opposed to the other's chosen way of life.

In the end, it was a fatal dose of blue radiation from the cave of the arachnid Great One on the planet Metebelis 3 that caused the Doctor to change his form once more. 1
