1963 - 1966
Viewers were first introduced to this dignified old man when teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright followed one of their students, Susan Foreman, home from school*, only to discover she "lived" in an old Police Box inside a junk yard.
Thinking that the old man they met a while later was keeping Susan prisoner inside, Ian and Barbara forced their way into the Police Box, only to discover the interior of a high-tech space ship.
The Doctor (who turned out to be Susan's grandfather), reluctant to let the teachers go now they knew his secret, set his ship to take four of them back in Time, and thus began a long series of adventures for the Doc and his companions.
The 1st Doctor may have been old, but he presented a challenge for anyone who crossed him. He had a quick mind and often talked his way out of difficult situations. Of course, this often worked in the reverse and he talked his way into the difficult situations as well.
For the entirety of the First Doctor's reign, his identity remained a mystery and little was revealed about his past. Viewers learned that the Doctor and Susan could not return back to their own planet, but the Doctor seemed to enjoy his nomadic lifestyle.
The 1st Doctor's era came to an end at the end of the Doctor's first encounter with the Cybermen on the Earth's twin planet, when he entered the TARDIS and collapsed, exhausted, and his companions watched amazed as he regenerated into a younger man.
Despite the mystery of his past, the Doctor won the hearts of millions of viewers who came to see him as their weekly guide to other worlds and times.Companions: Susan, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Vicki, Stephen Taylor, Katarina, Dodo Chaplet, Ben Jackson, Polly.
