Liz was the Doctor's replacement as scientific advisor at U.N.I.T. and when the Doctor returned to Earth to begin his exile, she was reassigned as his assistant. Liz only featured in a handful of adventures including helping defeat the first Nestine invasion, witnessing the reawakening of the Silurian creatures and helped stop an insane scientist from penetrating the Earth's crust. During the Doctor's visit to a parallel universe, Liz was known as Section Leader Shaw. After seeing the Doctor returned to his own universe, Liz decided to return to Cambridge to continue her research.

Jo Grant got her job as the Doctor's assitant by using her uncle's unfluence, even though she had only done a brief training. Jo was ditzy, but fiercely independant and her confidence and bravery grew with experience. Jo was the first of the third Doctor's companions to visit any alien planets, amongst which were Skaro and Peladon. Jo finally fell in love with Dr Clifford Jones and left the Doctor to explore the Amazon with her new fianc�.

Freelance journalist, Sarah, met the Doctor while attempting to infiltrate U.N.I.T.'s security. She stowed away in the TARDIS, and soon found herself in Medieval England. Her curiousity and feminist views often got her into trouble, but Sarah loved her time with the Doctor. She witnessed his third regeneration and continued to travel with the fourth Doctor until the Time Lords forced him to return her to Earth.
