Able Seaman Ben Jackson met the Doctor in the Inferno night club after he had been given a six-month shore-posting. The Doctor accidentally took off with Ben and his new friend, Polly, on board the TARDIS, leading them to a series of adventures, including the Doctor's first encounter with the Cybermen. Ben and Polly were present at the Doctor's first regeneration, and had few more adventures with the second Doctor, but when their travels returned them to Earth, they decided to take the opportunity to stay.

Polly was the secretary of Professor Brett, who had developed an evil-minded computer called WOTAN. After the Doctor had defeated WOTAN, he accidentally took off with Polly and her friend, Ben, on board. Polly was with the Doctor for his first encounter with the Cybermen, and was present when he regenerated for the first time. When their travels finally returned them to Earth, Ben and Polly took the opportunity to stay.

James Robert McCrimmon met the Doctor when he was rescued from the battle of Culloden in 1746 just after the Doctor had completed his first regeneration. Being from such a time, Jamie was often ignorant to what was happening and relied on the Doctor for explanations, but he made up for it with his loyalty and bravery. Part of the Doctor's punishment for meddling in Time was to see Jamie and Zoë returned to their own times with the memories of their adventures erased.

Victoria was orphaned when the Daleks murdered her father, a Victorian scientist: Edward Waterfield, and the Doctor became a sort of surrogate father to her. The Doctor and Jamie often teased her about her prim manner, but the three of them formed a strong team. Following two encounters with the Yeti, a visit to the tombs of the Cybermen on Telos, and a battle with the Ice Warriors during the second Ice Age, Victoria decided to stay with the Harris family after helping them to destroy a seaweed creature with the sound of her amplified screaming.

Zoë joined the Doctor after the Cybermen attacked the Wheel in Space where she was working as the librarian. She was extremely intelligent, with a degree in pure mathematics, and often outsmarted the Doctor, although inexperience in some areas frequently got her into trouble. When the Doctor was put on trial for meddling in Time, Zoë was sent back to her own Timestream with all memory of her adventures erased.
