William Pinkerton was a farmer and a family man,   seddling in Salisbury, Connecticut in the late 1700's. In 1804 he purchaced land on the Allegany river in Belfast, New York. Then in 1806 moved to New Hudson, New York, finally moving to Portville, New York were he spent the rest of his life.
William is in many local history books, like "Pioneer history of the Holland Purchase", "History of Allegany Co.", and "Allegany Co. and its people". He is buried in the Pine St. cemetery, I visited the cemetery on May 11, 2006. Most of the stones are broken, you can't read them real well. The village of Portville takes care of the cemetery. William Pinkerton's life is a great American story.
