Damn Cold Night
Based on Im With You originally recorded by Avril Lavinge
Alternative title

Scene 1 - <Ext. to a girl standing on a bridge on a rainy night.  The lamppost above her flickers out.  She looks around as though she is looking for someone.  She gets discouraged and steps onto the ledge.  She takes a deep breath.  A man walks up to her and stands next to her on the ledge.  She doesnt notice him.>

Paul: Life really suck this much?
Liz: (notices him) what?
Paul: Thats why youre jumping, right?
Liz: What makes you think that Im going to jump?
Paul: You are standing on the ledge of a bridge.
Liz: So are you.
Paul: Yeah, but I only came up here to talk to you.
Liz: Well youre wasting your time!
Paul: Sorry.
(They stand there for a few moments.  Show a shot of the river below.)
Liz: Its a damn cold night.
Paul: Yep.  It is a titbit nipply.
Liz: What?
Paul: Oh, nothing.
Liz: What did you say?
Paul: It was nothing.
Liz: What was it?
Paul: I just said that it is a tidbit nippy.
Liz: No.  You said it was a titbit nipply.
Paul: No.
(They step off the ledge.)
Liz: Yes you did!
Paul: Okay. (Pause)  but it was funny.
Liz: You are one weird guy.
Paul: Well, I was just about to go get some coffee.  So, would you like to come with me and discuss why our lives suck so much?
Liz: You know I dont know who you are, but I m with you.
Paul: Great!  (Pause)
Liz: Well.
Paul: What?
Liz: Arent we going?
Paul: Oh yeah.  Lets go. (They exit)
Scene 2 Ext. <The two walking together down the street.>

Liz: (laughing) all over his pants?
Paul: Yeah, we couldnt stop laughing.  Oh, you should see the pictures.
Liz: Thats funny.
Paul: So, why?
Liz: Why, what?
Paul: Why were you standing on the ledge of a bridge?
Liz: You want to know?
Paul: Yeah.
Liz: You really want to know?
Paul: Yes.  Just tell me.
Liz: No, its too personal.
Paul: Oh come on.  Please? (Makes a cheesy sad face)
Liz: Okay, if you really want to know.
Paul: I do!  I do!
Liz: Okay, it all started when I met this guy in college.  He was great, great looking, smart, funny, you know.
Paul: Actually I dont.
Liz: Oh, right.  Anyway, it was great, we had good times together, and eventually we fell in love, or at least I did.  Well, one day he proposed and I said yes.  So we were going to get married 8 months after he proposed.
Paul: Oh, I see where this is going, he left you at the alter right?
Liz: No, the service was beautiful.  The honeymoon went well, we were happy, you know.
Paul: Damn it!
Liz: What?
Paul:  Nothing.  So, then, what made you come out here on a night such as this?
Liz: Well, Everything was fine, until last week when he decided to tell me his little secret.
Paul: What did he tell you?
Liz: That he wanted a divorce.
Paul: (sarcastically) No!
Liz: Yes! But that wasnt the worst part; he also told me that he was having an affair.
Paul: That bastard!
Liz: And, on top of that, my father and sister died in a car accident the next day.  So I said I needed a little time to think.  And here I am.
Paul: Wow, so what are you going to do?
Liz: Im just going to go with you and get coffee.
Paul: Sounds good to me.
<They walk for awhile, until they reach a coffee shop.>
Paul: Ah!  Here it is.
Scene 3 - <ext. in a coffee shop.>

Liz: I thought he would have been there.
Paul: Where?
Liz: Well, I had this crazy notion that he would have come looking for me.  He wasnt I guess.  Thats why I came with you.  I figured whats the use?  You know?
Paul: Yeah, okay.
<Pause.  They drink their coffee.  Paul looks like he is looking for someone.>
Liz: What about you?
Paul: What?
Liz: Why were you on the bridge?
Paul: No reason.
Liz: There has to be a reason.
Paul: I was just taking a walk.
Liz: A walk?
Paul: Yeah a walk.
Liz: (sarcastically) Yeah okay.
Paul: I was!
Liz: Okay!  So, why were you taking a walk this late?
Paul: I had to think things over.
Liz: What things exactly?
Paul: Okay.  I was at a video store today and I met this girl.  We started talking and she said shed meet me here.  Thats why I came here.
Liz: Okay.
Paul: After I dropped the videos off at home I started to walk.  Then I saw you.
Liz: Oh okay.
Paul: But, I dont think shell show up.
Liz: Why not?
Paul: Well, after I talked to her this scary lookin scrawny guy came up to me and said, Thats my girl.  If I even hear from someone that you so much as looked at her, youre dead.  Capeesh?  So, yeah.
Liz: Well, there are three possible situations here: 1. she might like you so much that she would risk getting the crap kicked out of you.  2. She likes you so much that she wouldnt be able to bear seeing you get hurt.  Or 3. She was just messing with you, and wont show up.
Paul: How did you come up with all that?
Liz: I think I saw this situation in a movie once.
Paul: Oh!
<Pause.  They drink their coffee.>
Scene 4 - <ext. in a coffee shop.  Title: 1 hour later.>

Paul: That really happened?
Liz: Yeah.  It took her 3 weeks to clean it out.
Paul: I didnt know you could get that in there.
Liz: I would seem that you can.  Well, not you, but.  You know what I mean.
Paul: Yeah.  But I wish I didnt.  That story gave me way too much information.
Liz: Hey!  You told one too!
Paul: Yeah but (pause) okay your right.
Liz: Like always. (pause)
Paul: Well, I guess she isnt coming.
Liz: Oh, yeah, sorry.
Paul: Its okay.
Liz: Hey, I have an idea.
Paul: What?
Liz: Come with me.
Paul: What?  Why?
Liz: Just come on.
Paul: Okay.
<They leave the coffee shop.>
Liz: Take me by the hand.
Paul: Okay. (He grabs her hand.)
Liz: Now, follow me. (They start running.)
Paul: (While they run.) I dont really have much of a choice.
Scene 5 Ext. <a street corner.>

Paul: Where, exactly, are we going?
Liz: Im trying to find a place.  (They go inside the closest open location.) Im trying to find a face. (Yelling)  Is there anybody here that I know?
<The people look at her for a second, and then continue with what they were doing.>
Paul: Guess not.
Liz: It was worth a try.  Cause no one wants to be alone.
Paul: Like us?
Liz: Oh yeah.
Paul: So, what now?
Liz: Lets go sit down.
<They sit on a bench.>
Paul: (Looking off screen.)  Oh my god!
Liz: What?
Paul: Its already 3:00!  Oh man.
Liz: Actually, my watch says its about 10:30.
Paul: I really have to go.
Liz: Its only 10.
Paul: (interrupts her) Bye. (He runs off in a panic.)
Liz: Oh, damn.
<A scrawny guy enters.>
<Liz stares at him.>
Scrawny: What you lookin at?
Liz: Nothing.
Scrawny: Good.
Liz: (Chuckles)
Scrawny: What you laughin at?
Liz: Nothing.
Scrawny: Good.
<Liz exits in the direction Paul did.>
Scene 6 Ext. <Around the corner.  Paul is hiding.>

Liz: (entering) Hey!  I think I saw that guy you were talking about.
Paul: Is he gone?
Liz: Yeah.
Paul: Good.
Liz: What is wrong with him?
Paul: I dont know and I dont care.  Most likely a small penis.
Liz: What?  I couldnt hear you.
Paul: Nothing.
Liz: Hey, you know I should probably get goin.  See you soon?
Paul: Same time tomorrow?
Liz: Sure.  By the way.
Paul: Yeah?
Liz: Whats your name?
Paul: Its Paul.  And yours?
Liz: Its Liz.  Short for Elizabeth.
Paul: All right, tomorrow then.
Liz: Yes, tomorrow.
Lewi: (off screen) Hey, you!  Video store guy!
Liz: I think you should go.
Paul: Yeah, later. (He kisses her on the cheek.)
Liz: Bye.
Paul: Bye. (He runs off screen SL.)
<Liz starts to exit SR>
Scrawny: (enters SR) Im gonna mess you down. (Runs off SL)
Scene 7 <in Lizs house, her friend Jane is sitting on the bed.>

Jane: So where were you last night?
Liz: Huh?
Jane: I was looking for you yesterday.  Your insignificant other said you were out.
Liz: Well, I was.
Jane: So, where were you?
Liz: I went to the bridge.  And then went out for coffee.
Jane: Alone?
Liz: Well no.
Jane: Who went with you?
Liz: Paul.
Jane: Who?
Liz: Oh he is this guy I met on the bridge last night.
Jane: (in disbelief) A guy you met last night?
Liz: Yeah.
Jane: On the bridge?
Liz: Yeah.  Why is that so hard for you to believe?
Jane: It doesnt seem like you.
Liz: No it doesnt, does it?  But its the way things are. (Pause)
Jane: Oh, before I forget, May called, and it seems you have a date tonight.
Liz: What?
Jane: Yea.  Dont you remember?  May set you up with her brother.
Liz: Shit.
Jane: Well, you have to go out with this guy.
Liz: Right.  When is it?
Jane: Eight.
Liz: What time is it now?
Jane: 7:30.
Liz: I should go and cancel.
Jane: Whatever.
