Chapter 15

Jookran Manojem was not particularly pleased with the sight that greeted him in the kitchen. And he was clear with his displeasure when he cast a rock at both his daughter and her apparent...lover, for no other word could be used for a half naked man embracing a woman in anticipation of a kiss. The young man, Andrew, slightly nodded his head in acknowledgement while Yui blushed like a red rose in bloom.

Without a word, he turned on his heel and walked out. Yui buried her head into Andrew's shoulder and mumbled the words as he chuckled and patted her back.

"Go to your father. I will put on a shirt."

"I can't, Andy. I can't face my father alone."

Andrew tipped her face up and kissed the tip of her nose. "All right. We better make it quick because it looks like your father wants answers now."

In a matter of a few minutes, both were dressed more appropriately and walked into the garden behind the house where they found Mr. Manojem sitting in a gazebo drinking coffee. Only when the two got closer, they realized that he was holding the cup tightly, his face rigid. When his eyes glanced at them, they merely turned cold and glassy.

Andrew followed close beside her and when she got down on her knees, he, too, went down beside her. With a few glances between her father and her lover, Yui finally resented to putting her palms together and bowing down close to her father's feet and apologizing.

"So you know how to be sorry." Putting the coffee cup down, he sighed. "After last night's event, I would have thought you wouldn't cause anymore problem. Yui, I'm so disappointed in you. Wasn't it enough you caused a scene with your sister's fianc? But with this? I warned you to stay away from this man. No offense to you, Andrew. You're a great businessman but you're just not husband material for my daughter."

Andrew stiffened slightly and tightened his hand on Yui. "Am I to suggest that you assume me not suitable for your daughter?"

He took a deep breath and stared at the young man more carefully. With a brief reluctance, he leaned back. "I suppose you have other purpose in mind?"

Reassuring Yui, Andrew nodded. "Yes, I do. I intend to marry Yui. I am a man of honor. I take full responsibility for my action. With your permission, I would like to ask her hand in marriage.

That was it, Yui thought depressingly. Shock and disappointment overwhelmed her face that even her father saw it.

Skeptical of Andrew, Jookran promptly answered, No.

Andrew flinched almost too quickly. His hand wrenched hard over Yuis fragile hand, keeping her close. I will marry her, Mr. Manojem, with or without your consent.

"Oh, and you think that my daughter would agree so easily?" Jookran folded his arms and stared at the young man. "Maybe you haven't noticed, but Yui has made a name for herself lately and was caught in another unlikely situation with her sister's fiancs arms. You are a responsible man. But is my daughter responsible enough for her own action? Yui?"

Yui did not answer or look at her father. Disbelief and disgust at the revelation of her previous behavior, Yui could already feel the tears coming. She had wanted to make her family proud, but what did the new Jiranan do? Nothing but trouble. Uttering a whisper, Yui answered between tears, "yes, father. I will take responsibility for my action. And what Andrew and I did, I will also be held responsible. I will marry him, father, so as to keep this family from falling into another shame."

This time, it was Andrew who was hurt by her words. Responsibility. That was all she told her father.

"Well," Mr. Manojem breathed out before getting up to intake the news. "I suppose a wedding will have to do. Maybe it'll be enough to keep you away from causing more troubles, Yui. Maybe it'll make you realize that being like your sister isn't as easy as it looks. And besides that, at least you'll have someone who is responsible and honorable, unlike Jariya. Count yourself lucky."

Yui turned to look at Andrew and found him staring at her hand, interlocked in his. When he looked up, she suddenly realized that she was lucky. And how much she loved him. So what, if he didn't proclaim his undying love or his conviction and promises? He did though ask for her hand in marriage. And she never thought she would have this day.

"By the way, Yui." Her father had turned to look at her and oddly stared between the two. "You haven't been living in your aunt's room, have you?"
