Prologue

      Once upon a time in a faraway land, there lived a little princess named Janie. The princess lived with her father and mother, the king and queen. The princess was only five years old but possessed an incredible beauty and intelligence. The little princess was kind hearted and saw herself equal with all those around her, for this reason, everyone who met her loved her dearly. The little princess loved her father and mother with all her heart.

      But one stormy night, the loud voices of the king and queen awakened the little princess. Her mother and father were arguing, which frightened the little princess very much. Suddenly, the queen ran out of the castle doors and into the storm. The little princess followed her mother down to the waterfall. On one of the rocks, the little princess saw her mother and a dark shadow. The queen was pushed off the rock by the evil shadow and fell down onto the jagged rocks below. The little princess was frightened and tried to run, but the evil shadow saw the princess and�

      ...When the princess woke up, she could not remember what happened. The queen had died in the fall and the little princess was heartbroken. The king remarried and the little princess received a new mother�and a few months later a little sister named Tookta, for she looked like a doll. The little princess would not love her new mother for she vowed that she would only have one mother throughout her whole life.

      The king, still heartbroken from the death of his beloved queen shut himself out from the world and stayed only inside the castle. He left all the duties to his new queen. The new queen, although she did not dislike the little princess, thought it only motherly that she loved her own daughter more than the princess. So our little princess found warmth and love from the head cook in the castle, who loved the little princess as if she were her own. The little princess then spent her time with the servants of the castle and grew up with them. The servants loved their princess dearly and would do anything for her.

      The little princess grew up acting and dressing like a man because of her will to survive; and along with that, she also developed a strong sense of justice and willful personality. Although the new queen denied her many luxuries, the princess refused to bow down to the queen, for the only queen she would obey had already left this earth. Everyone still loved the little princess, which angered the queen very much, for she wanted everyone to love her daughter more. Whatever the queen did to her, the little princess always held onto her pride and knew one day that she would overcome her hardships and find happiness. And the princess grew up like this for sixteen years�
