Vickers Maxim Yard 1911 Period

Six big slips, six small slips. No docks in yard, but there is a small dock in the town 500 x 60 x 22 feet. Employees; shipbuilding circa 3950, gun mounting department, 2830, machinery, 3750.

Vickers –1921 Period

Area of shipbuilding only about 50 acres. 13 building berths, viz, one, 520 ft long; two covered-in, 420 and 330 ft long; three, 450 to 350 ft long; five covered-in, 330 ft long; all berths served by electric or steam traveling cranes, lattice work derricks and electric winches. Fitting out basin equipped with two 150 ton Giant Hammer-head cranes, 30 ton electric jib crane, two 10 ton steam derrick cranes, one 18 ton steam traveling crane and numerous other cranes, winches and capstans; also 20 ton floating crane. One floating dock, 2,000 ton lift; new floating dock, 420 x 59.5 ft to lift 5,200 tons. One graving dock, 500 x 60 x 22 ft. Shops for building boilers, engines, electric equipment, shells &c. Employees –engineering and shipbuilding about 30,000.

Vickers Armstrong Naval Yard –1935/6 Period.

Area of works: 121 acres. Thirteen building berths of length respectively –800 ft; 750 ft; 700 ft; 630 ft; three of 600ft; three of 550 ft; 450 ft;   400 ft; 350 ft.  The latter two being covered berths. Water frontage about 1,200 yards plus fitting out quays about 1,000 yards. Building berths fitted with tower cranes and covered berths by gantry cranes. Fitting out berths equipped with two 150  ton giant Hammer Head cranes, 30 ton electric jib crane, steam derrick and traveling cranes etc. Floating dock, 420 ft x 59.5 ft, to lift 5,200 tons. Graving dock, 500 x 60 x 22 ft. Extensive shops fully equipped with the most modern machinery for the construction of steam and internal combustion engines, boilers, electric equipment, gun mountings and every kind of naval and mercantile work.

Vickers Armstrong Naval Construction Works. 1944 / 45

Area of works 144 acres. Thirteen building berths, of length respectively 800 foot; 750 foot; 680 foot; two of 620 feet; two of 580 feet; two of 55o feet; 530 foot; 500 foot; 410 foot; 380 foot – the last two being entirely under cover. Water frontage about 1,200 yds plus fitting out quays about 1,100 yds. Building berths fitted with modern tower cranes and covered berths with gantry cranes. Fitting out berths equipped with one 250 ton and one 150 ton giant hammer head cranes, steam derrick and traveling cranes etc. Floating dock, 420 x 59.5 feet to lift 5,200 tons. Graving dock, 500 x 60 x 22 feet. Extensive shops fully equipped with the most modern machinery for the construction of steam and internal combustion engines, boilers, electrical equipment, gun mountings and every kind of naval and mercantile engineering work.

Vickers Armstrong Naval Works 1957-58

Area of works 144 acres. Eight building berths of lengths respectively, two of 1,000 feet, 950 feet,875 feet, 600 feet, 500 feet and two of 400 feet.

Water frontage approximately 1,000 yards plus fitting out quays approximately 1,200 yards.

Building berths fitted with modern tower cranes and fitting out berth equipped with one 250 ton and one150 ton giant hammer-head cranes, 30-ton electric jib cranes, 30-ton traveling cantilever crane, 10 ton lever crane, electric derrick and steam traveling cranes, etc.

Graving dock, 500 feet x 60 x 22 feet.

Extensive workshops fully equipped with the most modern machinery for the construction of steam and internal combustion engines, boilers, electrical equipment, gun mountings and every kind of merchant and naval engineering work.
