Jim's Writing Page

Through all my choices at a career, writing has always been there. The logical end would be that eventually, I will be doing writing as a career. I won't sacrifice my income for it. There will have to be some kind of other business or career of mine in place to do that.

But, originally I started out very young doing it. I wrote poems and stories when I was in grade school. Not as assignments, but for my own fun. Eventually I was writing for the school newspaper. I wrote a comedy/editorial column of my own, and I had a continuing series about a super hero called "Carpet Man" that I wrote with a friend, Mike Doherty. Mike and I and several other friends graduated to flim during that time. I wrote, directed, produced and some times acted in several short films in 8mm. At the time it was an expensive hobby, but I was really into it. I actually did a 30 minute comedy/mystery about two guys trying to avoid a spy and had a "showing" with about 75 people. It worked out really well. I continued writing for a local newspaper with occasional contributions. My interests tapered off before I moved to the west coast.

But after being out in California for a few years, I found a group of people who were producing their own comedy show for local access TV. Their founding member John Rydelli had been on a regular cable show doing a short segment and he wanted to do his own whole show. Becasue I had both a technical and writing background, I was in many facets of the creation and production of the show. It was called "Poor TV" and was billed at the poor man's cable access show. We did 7 shows and were heralded by local papers and were on the front cover of Orange Coast Magazine.

Several members of the cast and crew, after the disbandenment of the show, tried to start their own, but were unsuccessful. Some of the other writers went on to write for major television networks, some did books, some became famous cartoonists. I didn't persue it much after that until I got into radio and started writing my own copy and commercials. But I have been working on my own book and television sitcom pilot. S-l-o-w-l-y. Oh well, project #162. You know how that goes!

In memory of all the times I drove across the Housatonic River in Connecticut and felt it should have been said with a Scottish flair, (and for all the times I obliged myself): Hear Jim say "The Housatonic River!"
