| The White-winged Dove is easily distinguished from the Mourning Dove, both in size and in feather markings. The White-winged Dove is a larger bird and greatly resenbles a pidgeon. Both sexes appear the same and exihibit dark gray coloration with a rather short, rounded tail tipped in white. Although the white wing patches can be seen plainly while the bird is on the ground, they become even more obvious while in flight. The White-einged Dove is very noisy and it makes a ricj, heavy cooing sound that can be easily heard. Although the White-wing Dove is essentially a seed eater it delights in the red fruit of the Saguaro catus. The White-winged Dove prefers the nesting site of dense mesquite, but will also nest in Cholla cacti and other desert shrubs. |
