Grade: 2nd New York Core Curriculum: Standard 1: Analysis, Inquiry and Design Key Idea: The central purpose of scientific inquiry is to develop explanations of natural phenomena in a continuing, creative process S1.1 Ask why questions in attempts to seek greater understanding concerning objects and events they have observed and heard about. Key Idea: The observations made while testing proposed explanations, when analyzed using conventional and invented methods, provide new insights into phenomena. S3.1 Organize observations and measurements of objects and events through classification and the preparation of simple charts and tables. Materials: - Count the Teeth worksheet - Nametags for each student - Tooth Brushes for each student - Colored pencils/markers - String - Glue Objectives: At the end of this lesson students will be able to... - label the different types of teeth - model how to floss their teeth correctly - show what happens when you drink a lot of sugary drinks Rationale: Purpose of this lesson is to talk to students about the different types of teeth, how to floss their teeth correctly and show what happens to your teeth when your are consistently drinking sugary drinks ENGAGE: Pretend that each student is a dentist for the day and they are taking a course to refresh their memories about the different types of teeth and good and bad eating habits 1. Students are each going to be getting a nametag stating that they are Doctors. You will start off saying Welcome to your tooth conference Doctors. They are here today to receive their certificates on learning the importance of teeth. Lets start off with the different kinds of teeth. Ask students what they already know about their teeth? If they know any of their names? Where they are located? EXPLORE and EXPLANATION: Talking with students about effectively brushing their teeth as well as flossing their teeth 2. Talk to students about how they should be brushing their teeth at least twice a day. (Ask students how much they feel they need to brush their teeth?) 3. Students then will be making a 3D diagram of the teeth and putting it together. We will be using this model to talk about the different types of teeth, their placement in the mouth and what is their job. - Incisors (Cutting teeth) - Cuspids (tearing teeth) - Bicuspids (Crushing teeth) - Molars 4. They will be labeling the different teeth with different colors and answering the questions on the page about the different teeth. 5. Once students have made their model mouth, they will be handed toothbrushes and you will go over how to brush their teeth correctly. 6. After students have learned the correct way to brush their teeth, have them cut little slits in between each tooth on their model mouth. 7. Students then will get a piece of string that represents floss and they will be shown how to floss properly. EVALUATION: 8. Students will be asked to show how they floss and brush their teeth using their 3-D models. 9. When students have demonstrated that they know how to correctly brush their teeth and floss they will receive a certificate stated they succeed. 10. Students also will be assessed on the worksheet they will have to fill out with their Science in a Bag kit. EXTEND: What happens to an egg when you boil it in soda pop? - Students will be sent home with a Science in a Bag kit to take home. - In the bag there is a letter to the parents explaining who I am, what the bag is all about, there is also a direction sheet explaining what the activity is and there is also a questions and comment page for the parents to fill out. - There will also be a worksheet that students will have to fill out about what happens to the egg when it was boiled in the four different types of liquid. - Students will be handed this bag and needs to be returned in one week, with the comment and questions page filled out. - The information will gathered will be talked about during class and students will be able to share the results they got. Modifications: There is one student who has severe behavioral issues and is working on the three Bs. Be respectful, Be responsible, Be ready. - Student needs to sit and use the three Bs throughout the lesson - Student needs to stay on task and have the students around him help him with that, needs to be told verbally to stay on task or to stay focused - Read directions out loud to students and give them verbal directions Assessment Rubric: Yes No Students are able to demonstrate Students were not able to show the correct way to floss and brush the correct way, they were their teeth. lacking some key points |
