Aquaman had returned to life (an embarrassing incident
involving a particle accelerator, three condoms and a pack of playing cards) and
found Atlantis had become a democracy, with Mera the leader of the opposition,
who had just joined the swinging scene. Orin was not going to play Hilary, and
marched straight to the Watchtower with a bunch of roses.
Superman was not pleased to see him. A few weeks ago, Lois
had ran off with the marriage councillor. Today he'd received a video with Lois
and her new life partner Celeste which was going to be released to the raincoat
brigade in a few weeks time. He'd teleported up to the Watchtower with a bottle
of wine and Swiss chocolates.
While Arthur was resurrecting and Clark's marriage was
deteriorating, Wayne Enterprises had shelled out for Paradise Island's recontruction
... and for the first time, fully functional toilet facilities and hot running
water was installed. Rumours that he personally introduced the shower head
massager were unconfirmed, but he'd been publicly honoured as the first male to
be honoured as a Hero of Themysciria.
Diana and Bruce had gone out a few times for drinks (and a
kareoke session which made the airwaves) and it looked like it was moving into
'serious' territory.
The three had gathered in a small room (used primarily for
drunken games of strip poker) to discuss the situation 'frankly and openly'.
The cleaning robots were on standby.
Batman was the first to speak.
"I know that you two consider Diana highly..."
The two murmured assent, clutching their gifts.
"... and I do to. I come to consider as ... well, quite
frankly more than just a friend. And ..."
Here it comes; the veiled threat and intimidation tactic. I
not going to listen, I am going to puncture his throat, and then run like hell to
where we keep the Kryptonite ...
"... if any of you two want to make her happy, then
you're free to do so."
"What?"
"Huh?"
"I mean it. I know I'm not the best suited for a
relationship, I still need to ... 'develop my emotional growth' or something
like that ..."
Superman looked at Aquaman with confusion, the King of the
Seas mirrored his expression.
"... and all I want to do is make her happy. If any of
you can do this ... then I'll step aside, right now."
There was a brief silence.
"What are you planning?"
"Nothing. I swear."
"You're planning something."
"Not a thing. I have no plans involving Diana."
"You said Diana."
"Yes. You didn't say our names. Just her."
"That's correct."
Superman ran a hand through his head, breathing laboured.
"You're trying to say ... you have no plans concerning Diana? No schemes,
no protocols, no anything at all?"
"That's correct."
"You know something about Diana?" snapped Arthur.
"What?"
"He's not planning anything because he knows something
about Diana."
"I never said that."
"That's right! You never said anything about her!"
"Why would I say anything about Diana?"
Superman suddenly placed his gifts down and walked up to
Batman.
"Look. You treat her right or ..."
Superman quickly stalked off.
"Er ... yeah. Ditto." Aquaman placed down his
gifts and left, never turning his back to Batman for a second.
The Dark Knight waited a few seconds, then checked the time.
"One minute ahead of schedule..."
He picked up the gifts and examined them.
"... sometimes I amaze even myself."
He left the room; they had reservations at the Four Seasons
in an hour ...
